I got a new BDC and I was doing some pool work to get used to it. I weighted neutral with my basic snorkel gear and wet suit. When I dove I was able to descend on an empty bladder and was able to achieve neutral with just a few bumps of air in the bladder. Should I add anything to this weight or is that ideal? When I did a drill removing it at the bottom, I noticed it would nose dive reg first pretty hard. Not really an issue I guess but the bc has weight integration and I don't know if I'd be better putting some weight there as well. I don't want to take weight out of my belt because if I did need to remove the bc because of an entanglement or something I don't want to float up. Suggestions? Thanks

Extra weight without needing it is not good.
When you did that pool dive, how much gas did you have?
Why are you concerned about the position of the bcd/cylinder when you take them off? With it on, do you have a horizontal position?

It was just an observation. I hadn't noticed that before. The bottle had about 900 psi.

Position was good also. Moving weight to the dump pouches wouldn't affect the position much because they are the in about the same place as the belt. I was really just not sure if I should have some weight that could be dumped in case of emergency. I wasn't sure how important it is. I didn't want to take weight from my belt and affect my neutrality without the bc on. Also didn't want unnecessary weight.

I was going to say, yes you need to add some weight until you latter posted 900 as the tank pressure. Neutral at 900 PSI with a few shots of air at pool depth is pretty good as a fresh water weight. You will need more in the ocean. If you wear or use anything different for an actual dive things may change.

If all of your weight can be on your belt and you are in nice comfortable horizontal trim you are good to go. If your feet droop trying MOVING something like 4 pounds up into trim pockets on your back. I would not be compelled to put anything in the ditchable BC side pockets.

It's important to be able to dump weight. But even if you did move it to the dump pouches, you would still be able to dump it. Hence the name "dump pouches" :)

Well that's what I'm asking really. Since my buoyancy is perfect in just my wet suit and snorkel gear, should I take weight and add to my bc. My only concern was, in the case that I had to strip my bc, I would be bouyant and wouldn't be able to stay down well. I'm sure this occasion would be rare but I'm not sure if that is an issue

You said your buoyancy is perfect (assuming neutral?) in just your wet suit and snorkel gear? Then stick with the weight exactly where it is.

Many rigs "nose dive" valve first when left alone because that part of the rig is usually more negative because of all the heavy gear up there... it's a non issue...

Thank you. I was having trouble getting across what exactly I meant. It was also a steel tank and that would give me some room to add weight if I use an aluminum

yea i you switch to al tanks then you could put the add'l weight in the bcd that way if you remove your rig at depth you wont have any issues

Thanks everyone. I guess I had issues with not having dump weight. I know, at depth, my wet suit will be less bouyant but I'm sure I would be able to swim up without issue
