Here's a picture of how I've attached the surgical tubing. Never had it slip out or break, but I've only dived it a dozen times or so. There's a spare piece of surgical tubing and mouthpiece zipties in my save-a-dive kit.

I'll jump in here and answer this... just cut the tubing.

Why would I want it to come off the necklace? I just pick it up and put it in my mouth, and when I'm finished testing, just drop it. The surgical tubing in no way interferes with the operation of the regulator, it can't come off accidently, I can't forget to put the necklace in the dive bag and turn up at the dive site without it, bunch of reasons for doing it.
