I don't really know how to divide it up, but DIR is mostly mental anyway. You need the right gear to complete it, but if you're there mentally, your way ahead of the game and the rest of crowd. The gear will come with time.
I frequently admit that I'm not 100% DIR (WKPP DIR), but probably closer to 95% equipment wise, and 95% mentally. See, there's at least two DIR camps: WKPP (Irvine) and GUE (Jablonski). GUE's DIR is little more relaxed than WKPP, for good reason -- the WKPP is doing nutt case dives and have to be strict. The mentality of the two camps are pretty much the same, but equipment standards of GUE are much more relaxed than WKPP. The fundementals are the same, but the specifics can be different.
I would certainly qualify for any GUE class, but I'd have to get a few things before the WKPP would let me near the water. So, DIR can be relative, and it isn't necessarily as strict as some believe. It's also fluid and some aspects change from time to time as they discover new things, but these tend to be small in nature and have little effect on the fundementals.
I don't care for the word "stroke" and don't use it in a derrogatory way towards others. Irvine's definition of it, IMO, is basically someone who knows who the best is, and what the best is, and ignores it for the more "dangerous" personnal preferrance. He doesn't necessarily use it for those who are totally oblivious (ignorant) to DIR, or to those who know about it and are working towards it -- both mentally and mechanically.
There, my DIR spew for the day.
Mike
PS. I've been on the journey for 4yrs, and I'm still not 100% there yet. Kept making dumb mistakes all the time in gear choices -- costly
. Take care.
