Went diving this weekend down on Cape Cod. I have my back-up bungeed around my neck. On my second dive, I pulled out my light (mounted "semi-DIR" style -- bolt-snapped to right shoulder D-ring, with light head held held via a bungee loop on my BC strap) to check for lobsters in a crevice. After seeing nothing inside, I re-stowed my light and went on my way.

About 5-10 minutes later, I started to practice deployment of my long hose and switch-over to my necklaced back-up, which I usually do at least once on every dive I do. I spit out my primary and when I switched to my back-up, I realized that it was snagged on something. I had managed to re-stow my light with the back-up hose underneath the light. I could just barely get the reg into my mouth. Not a huge deal, since I just stuck my primary back in and freed the back-up reg hose.

Perhaps this is why a DIR rig has the light mounted much lower (chest D-ring vs. the shoulder D ring on my jacket BC)....?

Anyone else have this happen before?

Your problem might be the location of the D-ring (too high??), however, the hose for your back up might be too long (too much slack). Maybe the necklace is too big which is allowing the second stage and hose to rest too low. Not really sure without seeing it.

L_D,

I suspect the necklace is too large. The backup second should
be close to your chin. Sounds as though you've got it on a
fairly large loop.

These are good suggestions. Do you guys have any links to a picture of someone wearing a bungeed back-up that is in the "right" position? I've seen plenty of pictures of rigs...not enough of people wearing the rigs.

Perhaps I need to take a look at my DIR fundamentals book tonight.......and then take a another look at my rig in the mirror with this issue in mind.

Part II -- re-edit:
Actually -- I just answered my own question. I was looking at Nelson's picture on this link below...I would say my necklace is actually tighter than the one he is wearing...it's the D-ring placement on my non-DIR rig that is the culprit (almost shoulder height).

LY -- thanks for the link.

Stephen -- I was doing some shallow daytime shore diving. I don't usually carry my primary on dives like this. I suppose a better execution would have been to just keep the back-up light in my hands for the entire dive.....

So until I invest in BP/wings rig, I will live with my light placement. At this point in my diving career, other gear takes precendence over the BP (namely a drysuit)

I'm just curious as to where the concept of the DIR Jacket BC originated. Isn't that an oxymoron. Please explain as I am totally confused.

I dive Hogarth. Just curious

:D People gotta start somewhere, eh? Even Irvine won't call someone a stroke as long as they're making an honest attempt to learn and are taking the steps to get there.
