I've often wondered about the thinking that would cause people to purchase an 'octo' that they wouldn't be willing to breath themselves...

Note: I do not support the opinion that is about to be expressed I am simply trying to present the other side of the arguement.

The idea behind having an octo that is different than a normal primary is that they tune it down make it a little harder to breath off of but it's a way to prevent free-flowing.

Now my solution is spend the extra few bucks so that the secondary regulator doesn't free-flow simply because it's a high quality reg.

Regarding a necklace being too restrictive in an emergency , I don't have knots in my bungee, so if I pull on it (very) hard it comes off. What also matters is where the octo is screwed into the first stage. Sometimes using a different port changes the angle just enough to reduce the tension when you turn your head while using your backup. I had to swap my octo and primary when I went to a long hose/bungee setup.
Later on I changed setups completely and now my backup and main are the same regs, and I test my backup on every dive to make sure it works (well). It also forces me to practice clipping off my primary!
