It would be horribly wrong for someone to do this, but with all this talk about non certified folks going into caves, I was thinking there has to be someway for them to let the dive shop give them a key.

A key to what, There is only one cave that has a locked gate with a key. The other systems that have locked gates (on land) require membership that can be verified easily.

Thanks Dive-aholic,
Are you speaking only to the state of Florida, or is this true of all cave diving around the globe?

We dove the basin of Vortex (of course not the cave) and Morrison Springs, but we have never gone to another venue with a cave. I guess I just thought they were all like Vortex.

If you do a web search, you'll probably find someone willing to sell you a forged C-Card. My experiance is the dive charters in the US are double checking certs with the dive agencies via internet.

Not a problem. Just show up and, after they can't find your cert on-line, tell them that you were certified in some other country. In my experience, the _ _ D _ dive shop in Florida couldn't locate my _ _ U _ nitrox card issued in Canada.

Really, though, Bob is right - using fake dive ID you are just a Darwin candidate begging for inauguration into the Hall of Shame.

I'm referring to caves in Florida, Mexico, the Bahamas, France, etc. Might there be another cave in the world with a locked gate? Sure. But it's not common. Vortex is very unique...

Divers walking to the Lake- This is how ya Cave Dive in West Texas!

We spent over a month trying to get permission to dive this site
Talking to 3 offices of the US Bureau of Reclamation, 2 differnet offices of the TX Parks and Wildlife, and 2 offices of the US Fish and Wildlife Service

Come to find out, they only let one guy and his team dive this place. Seems he has some never ending contract -- yea he get's paid to dive it :) -

Who knows, maybe one day other will get to see this place!

Fake cards are easy to make, I have one that shows me to be a "Discover Scooter" diver that I made as a joke after it was suggested by a friend. (It is obviously not a real certification card, I'm not trying to lie to people with it. I do not at all endorse making a fake certification to gain access to places you don't have the certification to dive.)

That is one problem with places that employ non-cavedivers to inspect the certificates of cave divers before letting them cave dive. As a cave diver, you'd be hard pressed to fool me. However, I gave my Discover Scooter card once on accident instead of my Cave card, and it was accepted. Of course, my buddy and I found that to be hilariously funny, but it's also kind of scary. I've also seen cave divers told they cannot dive because the person checking was unfamiliar with the agency or certification level. Less funny, and kind of sad.

It's getting harder now with more agencies offering certifications, and more levels within those agencies.

This is one of my favorites ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

My cave cards from pre-2000 were simple pieces of card stock with my info typed on them and a poloroid picture cut down to passport size, this was then laminated.

At the beginning of this year, I attempted to get a replacement for my lost Full Cave Card and found out that when I became a cave diver, NSS-CDS did not have a data base of every diver they had certified. My instructor had retired and lost some of his files. So, in the meantime, while I waited for Instructor and NSS-CDS to figure out what they were going to do, I made a new card, exactly like (i imagine) that NSS-CDS made my original card. The only thing I couldn't fake was the Abe Davis Award sticker.

NSS-CDS finally got me a new card, which to my surprise did not have the words Full Cave Diver or my picture. I guess things change.

Well, remember that the nss-cds has no "full cave diver" certification.
