Hi All,

Prior post on shots for Roatan...how about bugs. Do I need any special repellent for the island.

Greg

No, not any special repellant. we use DEET, others use everything from Garlic Cloves to Cactus Juice.

Like the last question :search: is your friend. It's that drop down box thingie in the upper right.

You'll find recommendations on types, strengths and everything else.

Many folks just stick to the shots you asked of previously... the local favorite is Flor de Cana Rum. ;)

Flor de Cana Rum? Oooooooo.....I like the sound of that. Can't wait to try some real soon!

Cactus juice worked great for me...you can get some off ebay from sullivan outdoor sports (or something like that). they also combine shipping.

I had originally tried Cutters with PICARIDIN but that did not work for me whatsoever.

Get the highest percent of DEET in a repellent. The no-see-ums can be nasty. Also, watch where you apply the DEET. Found out that it can eat away at most rubber materials.

Regards,
Dave (aka "Squirt")

FYI - I heard DEET is bad for the reef. It is best not to dive with any on you. If we use stuff with it, we usually take a shower in the morning before diving.

DEET would definitely not be good for your wetsuit. Cactus Juice seems to be a better alternative.

You can buy it on the island. Woody's Grocery in West End has two kinds of Off (including the Deep Woods one, which I think is 25% DEET). They sell it mainly in aerosol cans. They also sell Cactus Juice, which I noticed claims to be a "physical barrier" (I imagine DEET is a chemical barrier?).
