I have read many discussions on using breathing to control ascents and to begin a decending. What would be a good number count for exhaling to decend? How long does one have to exhale to decend to a depth were compression takes over and you just continue to decend. Of course your BC is empty upon decending?

I tend to breath quite deeply. I am trying to work on not exhaling quickly. Actually it looks like freeflow when I exhale. So I am trying to slow it down, with saying, "nemOOOOOOOOOOO". But I am not sure how slow/long my exhalation should be.

Some will say if you being to drop to fast then inhale. If you being to rise exhale. Which I do understand. However, I am speaking specifically about intial desent.

I usually breath in for about a 6 count and out for ~12. When decending it's shorter but I breath off the bottom of my lungs and not full breaths to about 10 feet. btw, I don't actually count but that is what it would be if i did so I actually just exhale about twice as long as the inhale.

Here's what I teach my OW students ...

As soon as you start to deflate the BCD, take a big, deep breath in. Don't exhale till you feel yourself starting to sink ... about the time you get eye-level with the surface. Then exhale long and slow ... it should take at least 5 seconds (longer with practice) to complete the exhale. Think small bubbles. Keep the BCD hose up and the deflate button pressed. Tuck your feet back back behind your butt, or cross at the ankles ... so you aren't accidentally kicking (which'll make you go up when you're trying to go down).

Just when you feel like you've exhaled all your air ... before you breathe in ... exhale some more. New divers almost always keep a bit of air in their lungs that you don't need ... it just inhibits your descent.

Once you're down a few feet, take a long, slow inhale ... then resume breathing normally ...

Nice post Bob could not have said it better.

After you no not to kick your feet I like to get parallel to the descent for less resistence at least to 10 feet you may be able to drop some weight.
 
Ah, this is Great. thanks for the help. I know this will aid me in trying to decend, and hopefully help me not to be overweighted because I can't sink/decend. In reading other post again they talk about controlled breathing, but never describe it. My coworkers daughter does water ballet and she has been trying to coach me on practicing on land, sort of using visualization. It actually seems to help, however I do it in private...I look kind of silly walking around the livingroom with all my gear on inflating and deflating my BC, or practicing my modified kicks on my bed. Wow aren't I a fun date, hey wanna come over and practice scuba...LOL...no I don't have a pool...LOL...
