My own rigging cost the following:

OMS aluminum plate $50
Halcyon steel STA $75
15 ft webbing $20
Zeagle wing $0 (adapted from my B/C) -- Dive Rite sells them for about $200 however
6 sets of D rings $30
Steel belt buckle $10

I did not get the suspended weight system, but otherwise I think you get the picture. Total price is under $200. If you add the cost of a new wing, then still under $400.

I do not understand why divers go for the retail backplate systems. Granted the Halcyons are beautiful. But is it really necessary?

Quaff King:
I'm not a big fan of the Dive Rite Plates although I really like their wings. If you compare the Dive Rite plate to a Hammerhead or Fred T they look pretty lame. The Deep Sea plates look nice but way to rich for my budget. The plastic liners are a nice touch but I can wrap my slots with bicycle tube for free and save a hundred bucks.

Why are the Dive Rite plates lame compared to Hammerhead? Thickness, tooling, metal quality, plate shape??? I was considering the set up referenced in earlier posts from northeast scuba supply. They have a package deal that includes everying (including weight system) for $450. But if the Hammerhead plate is that much better I might buy pieces instead of a package.

Got the following:

OMS SSBP
OMS 45# bungied bladder
OMS Deluxe Harness
OMS STA
Dive Rite SS Cam Bands
Dive Rite 32# weight system

Can't remember the numbers, but everything cost me $550.00 from Austins in Miami.
Everything is under warranty and service was great.

There's always some good deals on Ebay and Craigslist... The good thing about backplates is that you just have to replace worn webbing then your good to go.... the wing you might want to buy new or at least look it over really good before you d ive it.

Disclaimer: I have a hammerhead BP on craigslist

I went with the Dive Rite Transplate harness,ss bp, rec wing, sta , and weight pouches.
The whole rig was 525 at my lds.

The Hammerhead plate is thicker than any other plates out there, except for FredT's (he makes a wide variety) also they have 3 sets of mounting holes, whereasa the DR plate only has 1 set. If my data is correct neither plate is compatible with wings having a 3" cam band spacing like the Halcyon's do (unless you use an STA) Price on the DR is more than a Hammerhead also.

That said I have a DiveRite plate and it works fine... after all it's just a piece of metal... but I'd encourage you to contact FredT as his prices are comparable to Hammerhead and his plates are even more universal in their design...Though you will have to debur the plate yourself to get the best deal from him (he will debur for an additional charge however)

Aloha, Tim

The Dive Rites are not nearly as thick as the Hammerhead and don't have as many attachement points. I also like the bottom bends on the Hammerhead so it dosen't dig into your back. I prefer a slightly heavier plate because that weight comes off your belt. If you're diving any cold water the more you get off the belt the more comfortable you'll be. I also like the multiple mounting holes offered by the Hammerhead so you can move the tanks up or down. I don't remember seeing those on the Dive Rite. The OMS is also a very nice plate but on the pricey side.

Just found the invoice, so I got to correct my previous post about costs:

1) OMS SS Back Plate with Deluxe Harness $195.00

2) OMS SS Single Cylinder Adapter + Dive Rite SS Cam Bands $92.00

3) OMS Single Bladder BC 45 lb. lift /Black with retraction bands $233.00

4) 1 Sets of OMS Shoulder Pads / Hose Holders $25.00

Total cost was $545.00

Sorry, the weight system was another $90.00 for a total of $635 + $25.00 shipping for a grand total $660.00

Hi ClevelandDiver,

I've just sent you a pm regarding a BP/W setup.

Cheers,

SangP

I am going to try using my weightbelt. The BP/wing set up is less bouyant thank my old bc, and weighs more. I will have much less weight on the belt, will save over $100 and will have easier to ditch weights.

I guess I will see how this works.

Don
