Eh, to me it is not minimal cost for shorts...every pair I have found have been about 80+ dollars which is quite a lot since ive been transitioning a lot of my equipment (has been very costly lol). I will put them on my list of possible things to buy.

This is $50, exactly the same as the Highland pair. Instead of getting SMB pockets, thigh pocket .... this is your best bet

I don't think any r-ring is that good of an option. Spool tent to get loose and line come out. Line is evil.

I tried the DGX thigh pocket but found that it moved around a fair bit during the dive so I got the DGX neoprene shorts, I think I paid $40 for mine (definitely not more than $50). I really like the shorts and having 2 pockets makes organizing a lot easier. I usually wear them with an 8/7mm wetsuit but have also used it with a White's Fusion drysuit.

and one in a tail pouch bolted to the bottom of my backplate (that one can be removed if I'm doing a Caribbean reef dive and don't feel that I need a redundant SMB, although it's hardly noticeable.

I prefer pockets so I'm willing to give you a hardly-used DR version of the above for the cost of shipping if you want it.

I use the XS Scuba tail pouch noted in doctormike's post and find it very convenient. I clip the spool separately on a d-ring.

However, in anticipation of taking a Cavern class where I would need to stow additional items I picked up a pair of the neoprene pocket shorts noted in decompression's post ($50 for the unbranded ones from Dive Gear Express, but $80 for the exact same shorts sold under the Highland brand by other sources such as Leisure Pro). They work great--tons of storage space in those pockets. The only disadvantage is the obvious: yet one more piece of gear to don, doff and travel with.

Single tank, warm water diving, it's on my left hip d-ring below the SPG. I have tried it on the butt d-ring, but I got back on the boat and sat on it and broke the spool, so I don't do that any more.

You guys crack me up. Perseverate over infinitesimal divergences from horizontal trim (in order to minimize drag while swimming) and then you put these things on...

Thanks, but I think that one is enough! :)

I like pockets too. Have a pair of neoprene shorts for when the dry suit stays home.

I am prolly going to SB hell for this..... Wreck reel for navigation only, clipped off to the right hip d-ring. Finger spool and smb clipped off to bottom left d-ring on rich stage bottle. Backup lift bag is clipped off to butt ring as they do not break or cause pain if you forget to unclip it prior to benching on the boat.
YMMV
