So i have finally decided that i am going to go with a BP/W set up for my BC. How does this sound to yall?

Oxycheq Ultralite Travel Backplate

Oxycheq Hog Harness

And here is where i need a lil help: for the wing, i am debating between a 18# and a 30# wing (oxycheq mach V). i am 6' 0", 155lbs, and use around 8-9lbs of weight. i do mostly warm weather dives, but occasionally go into colder water using a 5mm or a 2piece 5mm. so how much lift would yall suggest?

then of course ill be getting the medium weight pockets, and cam straps.

thanks yall!

Hi skimphish,

Not quite enough info in your post for more than a general answer, but here goes:

You seem to be trying for a "one-size-fits-all" solution that will probably not be ideal for either extreme of diving conditions you've described. An 18 lb wing can work very well in warm water and thin or no wetsuit, but may not provide enough lift in cold water with 10mm of neoprene on your core (your 2 piece 5mm = 10mm where they overlap).

You determine the lift capacity needed based on loss of buoyancy at depth and the weight of your rig at the surface.... in other words, the wing needs enough lift to be able to float your rig (without you in it) at the surface, and needs to have enough lift to compensate for wetsuit compression and resulting loss of buoyancy at depth.

Tobin from Deep Sea Supply is terrific at helping folks determine how much wing lift capacity they need, what type of backplate, etc.

If you can only afford one setup, I'd buy the one for the area you will be doing most of your diving. Or, the other approach would be to buy the wing that provides enough lift for your thickest wetsuit, but then you'll have too much wing in warm water.... again, I'd be worried about an 18lb wing having enough lift with a 5mm 2-piece suit.

Best wishes.

I would go with their AL BP and the 30# wing as both are more adaptable to varying equipment configurations. Good luck!

My guess is that an 18 lb wing would be a stretch for cold water diving.........

I use an AL BP with 18 lb wing for warm water - up to a 3 mm wetsuit

and........

A SS BP with 36 lb wing for cold water

I also don't use a weight belt all my lead is on BP/W in XS Scuba pockets

Hope this helps............M

what other info would i need to post? the only other thing i can think of is that i use AL80's when diving... i have minimal gear while diving (just a primary light).

good info though. thanks alot! i think i will end up getting a 30#wing, that way its a lil more diverse. i doubt that i will be doing too much diving where i will be wearing anything more than a 5mm, and the 2 piece was just a one time thing at a spring. so thanks again!

oh, i have also read a couple reviews on the Ultralite Travel Backplate, and they all seemed to be good. it looks comfortable as well. however i have noticed that more people use the AL backplates. why is this? should i be looking at an AL backplate more than the ultralite?

Does having too much lift on a wing for tropical conditions ever really pose a serious problem? I'm thinking 30lb on board shorts / rash vest or 3mm suit setup.

The AL plate is more stable, one of the leading reasons to go BP/Wings to begin with. I would go with the AL plate when acquring your new set-up then look to purchasing a used ultralite if you must....By the way there is probaly only a 20 oz difference between the plates...

is an AL BP as comfortable though? the Ultralite just looks to be more comfortable. im not trying to defy ur knowledge or anything, just curious as to how a AL sits between the shoulders as compared to a ultralite.
thats the same kinda setup im looking at. havent seen that kinda cam strap though, but i kinda like it...
i read this a couple times actually. lol. thats why i was so intrigued by it. thanks for the info though!
