I got Tobins setup without ever seeing one (if you don't count pictures on the web and scubaboard), let alone trying it. I think you're really going over the top with the whole plate thing, but hey, your time, money and nerves.

Me, I'm very happy with my choice, and I did go through several options before I made the final decision. Tobin is evil though, he makes an excellent complete package, so it really doesn't make sense to buy only 1 item from him, but the full package due to competitive pricing. ;) Has a good nose for doing business...

I had the opportunity to see quite a few before I got mine- they are popular around here. :) I did not see any real differences between plates typically used for singles. My friends who dive DSS have steel backplates but I needed to go with plastic because I would have been too seriously overweighted in steel or aluminum. The overall design is the same, however & I have been quite happy with it- Tobin makes a great product!

That being said, there are many other excellent products out there to choose from. If you want to see one first, try locating a Zeagle dealer in your area to see if they have one of their's in stock. That will at least allow you to get your hands on one first.

:D

I have found most SS plates to be almost identical - so go for the shinyest one :)

But the shiniest one will require constant polishing, and you'll never be able to clean your fingerprints from it. It will be a mess. ;)
