I have been diving on and off for about 5 years now. I've had my bc, fins, snork, weights, and mask since the beginning. I decided it's time to stop renting crappy equipment and invest in something that will last me a long time. After researching for about a month and going into the LDS a few times to talk with them, I decided on a setup. I got a Atomic Z2 regulator. I chose this over a Sherwood Magnum. Yes, it is $70 dollars more, but it breathes like a $600 reg and requires maintenance every 2 years or 300 dives. So I chose the Atomic. Tried it in the pool and it breathes so easy it was amazing. For my octo I went with a Sherwood Minimus. Yes, I've heard they're hard to breath from but I didn't think it was too bad. For size and price, I figured why not. I thought a lot about weather I should get a computer or not. I decided not to. I got a Sherwood Console. Simple depth and pressure gauge. Nothing fancy. It will teach me to pay attention to my depth, safety stops, etc. I'll buy a comp once I get nitrox certified, but for the kind of diving I'm doing now, I don't think it will be needed.
I'm very happy with the setup and hope it continues to serve me for a long time. Stoked to make my first dive with it!

congratulations! it's nice to have your own equipment... if the shop hasn't already shown you, ask them to show you how to maintain it and clean it... it's not the biggest deal if you're in fresh water, but a must if you dive in salt water!

take your time with the new gear and practice with it! if something doesn't feel right, ask your dive shop for help...

enjoy!

The Z2 is an excellent reg. I would rethink/return the Minimus.

Yeah I am very happy with the Z2 so far. I'm planning a local dive this weekend down near Wabasso. Hopefully by then the water will have returned to normal. I live right on the beach and this hurricane is creating quite the commotion. We'll see about the Minimus. I haven't tried it at depth.
