I've read that they have installed a series of booms in Destin Pass. I'm not sure exactly where these are located, but do you think these will affect diving/snorkeling? Specifically, I'm wondering if local authorities will close down diving, snorkeling, and swimming around the jetties because of the booms, even if all the beaches are open and there isn't any oil. I can envison some overzealous officials deciding they do not want anyone in the water around the booms. According to the Destin Log, the booms are supposed to be there for 30 days, and probably all summer. I did read the post today from someone who said he was diving at the jetties this morning, so I am assuming as of now things are still open.

Booms have been up for a few weeks at Ft.Pickens and we've been diving with them, so I don't think anyone will say anything.

That was probably me. The only place I saw any booms was near the bridge, but they may have just been using that as a staging area. I would hope that at some point they would deploy lines of booms across most of the inlet. No signs or announcements, there were plenty of people swimming and the big snorkel pontoon showed up just as I was leaving.

There are all kinds of rumors flying around Destin right now. I just left Destin and spoke with a friend who has run his charter boat in Destin for over 30 years. All the booms are still staged on shore as they have been for a couple of weeks. There are some booms in the water on the east side of the bridge, but they are not deployed at this point. There are no booms blocking the pass at this point. It appears the main line of defense will be under and around the Destin bridge. They are trying to block oil from reaching Choctawhatchee Bay. They will also try to protect Destin harbor.

Captain Harold told me that two recreational fishermen were fishing outside of the 9 mile boundary this morning. They were fined $6,000 each for fishing outside of the zone!!! If anyone is going fishing, make sure you stay within the zones.

Looks like they are in the water now.

If they are in the water now, they would have had to deploy them late last night or early this morning. I will check later today. I suspect this picture may have been from Thursday. They unloaded them, stretched them out, and then staged them on the shore. But who knows at this point. I will be in Destin this afternoon. If they are deployed I will snap a few pictures.

Thanks for the link Mike.

Yikes! From this picture it looks like a good portion of the commonly-dove area will be relatively unprotected...

Yep.. These photo's are all dated June 4th. Not sure what they put in the water when, but at least one of them shows them in the water.

EDIT: Btw... I look forward to your report! Thanks!

Thanks for the response everyone. Sounds like the booming per se will not close down the jetties.
