I've been pricing a trip, and came up with 3 options.
1.Curacao
2.Bonaire
3.Both

The logistics and price for flying from Denver greatly favor Curacao. If we visited both islands, we would fly into and out of Curacao.

My wallet says to stick with Curacao.
My heart says to hit both islands.
My friends say go to Bonaire.

What do you all think?

how long are you spending? If it's just a week I wouldn't do both, I think you kill too much time in the middle of the week moving.

I agree with Damselfish - you'll waste too much time doing both.

The diving in Curacao is as good as the diving in Bonaire - it's just less well known because Bonaire has been promoting its diving industry for a long time and the Curacao government only got going in the last 5-8 years. Curacao has many more things to do and places to see. It's got great history and architecture - the downtown is one of two in the Caribbean that is a Unesco World Heritage site.

That is what I wanted to hear about Curacao!
Thanks for the quick replies!

If I did both, I would go 10 days. 5 on each island. If I go to one, it will be for a week. I'm leaning that way because it fits my budget!

What do you think of Saint Michiel Bay Inn?
I'm also looking at Lion's, but I don't think they have availability.

I perfer Bonaire because it is not as "built up" as Curacao. I like the slower pace of Bonaire over Curacao as well.

Yes, it is a bit of a pain to get a good flight into Bonaire but, it can be done. I have found tickets in the $450 range from Atlanta but I am sure that it is more coming from Denver.

Both locations have a good variety of resorts/hotels to stay at that will fit almost any budget. I have found better deals on Bonaire overall because it is a smaller island. The hit to the wallet, at least in my experience, is the flight there. Once on island I can usually contain costs to the point where I spend less than 1500pp for two weeks including RT air.

No matter where you end up have a great time!

Yes, the diving can be just as good in Curacao, better sometimes, although it is more important to pick the right location/operator and dive sites in Curacao to get the best experience. Unlike Bonaire, most hotels in Curacao are not serious dive resorts. I think there is more other stuff do to, see, eat in Curacao. Probably harder to go wrong diving-wise in Bonaire. The shore diving is a little different in Curacao in that sites are more spread out and some are at beaches that charge for entry, though that's not really a bad thing as they don't charge much and you may get bathrooms, snackbars, etc. for the fee.

Curacao is NOT all built up and busy, but lots of people come away with that impression because they stayed near town and didn't get away from there (or visited on a cruise ship.) Once you get away from town there's plenty of remote nothingness and it all looks pretty much like Bonaire.

St. Michael Bay Inn - is that Curacao? Been to Curacao 6 times and never heard of it, not that that means anything. We stayed at Lion's Dive long ago, it's ok and a good location if you want to be near a lot of activity and stuff, but further from IMO most of the better diving in Curacao.

Habitat used to be my favorite all around choice on Curacao, towards the other end of the island in in the boonies a bit, near the better diving, but still reasonable to drive downtown for dinner. They have a great dive op, though the house reef is getting beat up over what it was 10 years ago. Unfortunately the restaurant mostly sucks (always has) and the hotel itself is not maintained and is getting rundown so you might be disappointed with the facilities if you're at all fussy. Lots of people seem to like Sunset Waters nowadays, further down toward the other end of the island. Kura Hulanda Lodge is beautiful as is the shore dive there, though it's not a "dive resort" and the diving setup isn't nearly as convienient as someplace like Habitat. (I also had enough issues with the on site op Ocean Encounters West to discourage me from going there again while under the same management.) If the dive op from Habitat moved to Kura Hulanda it would be heaven.

Thanks for the great advise.
I'm leaning pretty hard toward Curacao, but the arguments for Bonaire are strong too!

I was also looking at All West Apartments and Diving in Westpunt, which is also serviced by Ocean Encounters West. http://www.allwestcuracao.com It looks great, but...
Is this place totally isolated?
Is OEW really bad?

So, it looks like Lions is out.

Here is a link to the St Michiel Bay Inn. http://www.stmichielbayinn.com/

It looks like its west of Willemstad in St Michiel. Not nearly as far west as Habitat. The emails that I have exchanged say they have an excellent Dive Op nearby, but I haven't gotten the name of the Op yet.

Anyone know about this?

I will also look further into Kura Hulanda.

Whether you go to Bonaire or Curacao, 1 thing that is really important to me, is easy access and quality of the house reef. Probably the main reason I keep going back to Habitat.

I frequently will sneak in a morning dive before breakfast and after dinner. It doesn't need to be a full length dive either. Dive as long or as short as you want. You have unlimited tanks, so I don't feel guilty or shortchanged if I end the dive after 20 or 30 minutes.

The house reef advice is key! Thank you!

I'm still hoping that someone can share their experience with either West End Apts and Diving, or St Michiel Bay Inn.

For people who have stayed near Westpunt, did you feel isolated? Or is there enough going on to make the topside time fun?

Should your trip be Scuba centered go Bonaire (I´m going there on April 4th!!!! Yeeehaaa!!! :monkeydan - 1st time there :coffee:), if your companions (and yourself) don´t care that much or just want to do "some" diving, then go Curacao. Never been to neither, but have been doing some heavy reading and enquirys.
