Okay, now they are saying that it could be suicide. He was tied to a post in the water with his throat cut, that's an unlikely way to commit suicide!

If it was suicide, you have to admire the poor guys dedication... ;-)

My guess is there is a pissed-off husband or boyfriend involved in this.

So he cut his own throat and then tied himself to a post?

Don't be silly. He would need to tie himself up first, leaving one hand free... Obviously. ;-)

As well as Colombian drug cartels, Mexican kidnappers, South African gangs and just about every group who has wanted to send a message for the last couple of thousand years. Even decapitation, which I believe you are referring to, is not unique to any specific groups.
None of those you mentioned are likely to operate in SE Asia.

Slit throat is a signature of Islamic terrorists.
Now you're just being silly. And, IMNSHO, completely and utterly so.
  1. Pattaya is pretty far from the Islam-dominated Malay areas of Southern Thailand, which is the area of Thailand where there has been any Jihadist attacks.
  2. Malay Jihadist actions in Southern Thailand have historically been of a completely different type.
  3. Killing a single tourist, without any public statement, is one of the more stupid ways to perform terrorism. That sounds like something that Jesús Bernal from the "First Weekend in July Movement" could have done in a Carl Hiaasen novel.
So, in short: There's absolutely nothing - except in your fantasy - that indicates that this was anything else than a run-of-the -mill criminal murder. Even guessing about something more sinister than that is ridiculous. And assuming that it's a Jihadist action, just because the victim's throat was slit, takes the whole supposition beyond the ridiculous and well into the absurd and surreal.

Pretty hard to trust a news article for any useful information.

Here's 3 different and just as likely scenarios.

Accidental: could've been hit by boat propeller and body drifted and entangled in fishing line/net/etc on pier/wood/etc.
Suicide: crazy people do crazy things, some are pretty creative.
Murder: go watch some crime dramas and pick your favorite scenario.

If this is a SCUBA accident, there could be relevance for solo divers in the area. There are photos online; the guys hands are free, it is only his "backpack" tied to post at waterline, and the throat injury is a gash, more than a slit. If the aforementioned line turned out to be his SMB cord, this is looking like he got run over and dragged back to dock.

Oh look who is playing skeptical now! I was under impression you still believe in Santa and that touching toads causes warts. Silly me, indeed.

Thai police find foreign diver with throat cut and tied to post in sea
Wouldn't surprise me. A couple of years back, in Koh Tao, a guy was found hanging from his balcony, with his hands tied behind his back. Was also ruled suicide.
