If one knows a secret, it's rude to allude to it on a public board and make everyone that doesn't know the secret feel deprived. My opinion, of course.

Maybe so, but don't tell everyone. ;)

How true,

God forbid I should ask where someone saw some Eagle Rays! I suppose it's tabu to say where the Splendid Toadfish are too? Grow up!

Oh my God, give me a break! If you didn't see the humor in my post, I'm sorry. Every dive shop on the island knows where the spot is (opr should) and knows when the right time of year is. It's not REALLY a secret. No need to get all bent out of shape about a dive site.

Since you people didn't see any humor in the post, it's in the north, outside of park boundaries. It is a special dive, so I wouldn't plan on getting on the boat and say you want to dive north to see the Eagle Rays. It's considered an advanced dive and we must obtain permission from the harbor master in advance to go there. Conditions and weather need to be close to perfect. Any shop that makes this trip will not just take anyone there, as the divers must be evaluated first and the trip has to be planned with the right people. The currents can be ripping and it is a deep square profile dive. There are several "names" for the site, Eagle Ray alley, eagle ray wall, etc.

As I also said before, it is seasonal (December through Feb). The schooling Eagle Rays are not here all year long, nor is there even a guarantee that you'll see them during the season. We have been going up there about once a week and sometimes we don't see any at all.

Thanks for clearing that up. Humor is sometimes difficult to convey in writing, hence all the little emoticons and such. FWIW, it was mostly the other poster who wrote (quite seriously, it seemed to me) that that the dive op told him/her to not reveal the location of the spot to see the rays that prompted me to post my objection.

Anyway, I apologize if I was being over-sensitive. There is a lot of elitist BS in the world, and I have a pretty low tolerance for it.

BTW, on my last trip there, in May, we were lucky enough to see three eagle rays out on the southern reefs. One of them was huge, and it swam quite close to us. Maybe we'll get lucky again this May...

I know what you mean Gordon. If you look at my post where I said it was a secret, I actually did use a smiley to convey the humor.

The fact does remain that there are in fact only a few shops that will make that trip, and as I said...even then everything has to be just right. And yes, we all light-heartedly tell people, don't tell anyone about this place, it's a secret and we don't want everyone up here...it's part of the excitement of the dive. The truth is that many shops don't go up there because of the varying conditions and the "hassles and hoops" that they have to go through to go up there. It's not a dive for big groups either...groups HAVE to be small so that they don't get scared off...no tank bangers, shakers, dive alerts, etc. No flashes on the cameras. Lots of little "rules" to follow on this dive. Also, everyone has to surface together, so we need to have divers with good air consumption for obvious reasons and as well, we typically end up needing to do a 10 minute stop due to the depth and profile, so more air for that. There are many factors in planning and doing any of the dives in the north, so they aren't "everyday" sites.
