So far, so good. I've never blown off a mandatory deco stop. The closest I've come was on a 22-min deco stop when my pony reg was sucking water as well as air. I just kept breathing slowly and ended the dive right after the required stop. I usually extend my deco hangs for 2-3X the required time if my main tank gas allows (it usually does and that was the only time i've ha to use my pony for deco).

I should have specified: (Navy Table VIII ) , which indicates staying at 165 feet for 2 hours--then go to Table 6 at 60 feet with extensions, if necessary.

My Navy manual isn't handy right now. Table 8 has you on 50% at 165 right? 20 min-on 5-off?

What were the symptoms or what about the profile made them put you on a Table 8, that's unusual. Did you embolize too?

No embolism, bilateral pain and nervous symptoms, blurry vision. I don't recall it honestly being 50%. If I remember right, it was air. Quite a few years ago.. But it was 165 for around 2 hours and finish with modified table 6.

The profile was 110' for a little less than an hour (working dive, if you want more detail than that, PM me) The reason for table 8 was more because the hit wasn't my first. (Bend and fix diving in the military)

Rick Inman:
Have you ever blown off any deco time?

If so, what were the circumstances?

Were there any consequences?

Had to do one kind of "emergency" ascent.

We had done 25 mins at 150. SI maybe 1-1.5 hours?
Dive to, at 140 about 8 mins in I turn to check on my buddy, he indicates he is NOT OK.

Try to ask if he is OK to try to swim up the reef, hoping not to have to do a blue-water ascent, but he says he needs up right now.

Got to 70 feet, did a gas switch, stayed a couple of mins, 1's up from 70 (including a lot of up and down between 30-50 feet as he fought to keep buoyancy).

Breathed 50% bottle on surface for 3-5 mins before getting on the boat.

No symptoms, but I dont think we really blew off any real deco as we just recalculated on the fly. I would have liked to have spent some time shallow though as it was our 2nd of the day

What was the cause of the buddy's need to ascend?

I have blown off a few deep stops (and did them a bit shallower) simply because I didn't like where they were. (last time, VR3 called for a stop in a bedding plane in Peacock three on the henleys castle line. I prefered a bit larger area to do the stop)

I simple did it shallower and all was well.

No but I thought about it (does that count?) I had 15 minutes left at 10' and had to pee so bad it hurt bad but I made.

I've been there. :shakehead I completed my stop, but I extend my stops by at least 5 minutes, sometimes longer. Not that time! I also hang at the surface for 10 minutes talking about the dive with my wife before we head to the van with our gear. I didn't do it that time either! In fact, I surfaced as soon as my deco was up and ran to the tables with doubles on! Still no p-valve (wife doesn't have one, but once I convince her to go with Depends..... :D ).

I blew off 5 minutes of 16min 99% O2 after a second 180ft dive. Kids, don't try this at home. btw, no side effects (small brain was pre dive)

Yeah, this happened to me recently on a 96 minute night dive at Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach.

According to my computer, I hit a max depth of 166 ft, with an average depth of 119.7 ft. By the end of the dive I had accrued over 9 hours of deco. I said, "screw that, I'll be here all night. I'll do surface deco instead." I totally blew off the 50ft stop that my computer was telling me I had to do, as well as all the subsequent stops.

Afterward, I joined my dive buddies (divekim and OCdiving Deb) at Starbucks for some java. Then I went home, kicked up my feet on the desk while I got caught up on some work. I eventually crawled into bed and slept through the remaining 7+ hours of deco. The next morning I awoke feeling perfectly fine.

Here's a plot of the dive profile downloaded from my computer:

BTW, this is a classic example why should never blindly trust what your computer is telling you. Every So Cal shore diver knows that you have to lay in the sand at the end of the reef at Shaw's Cove to hit anywhere near 50 ft ... avg depth is more like 30 ft. This particular computer was sent back to the manufacturer a few days later for warranty replacement. ;)
