Okay after last night class which was mostly mask clearing and snorkeling. With around a total of about ten trips to the bottom of the pool (14') I got home and found I had a bloody nose. I am confused with this as my mask was a little tight and was putting pressure above my left eye. (Which by the way is still sore this morning) My left nostril was bloody and would not stop till around two hours after I was out of the pool. I did not have much problems equalizing my ears when I was at the bottom of the pool so I do not think it was that. Any ideas? Anything would be helpfull so do not hold back?

Ohh yea the reason my mask was to tight was because my mask was leaking a lot and it turns out it is a little to small. I am planing a trip back to the LDS I bought it out of to have a discussion with them as they where the ones who fit me with the mask

It's not unusual when you're starting to dive to have some nosebleeding. When you're starting out you can tend to use more pressure and rupture some blood vessels in the mucous membranes. With the pain above you eye, it sounds like you may have gotten some reverse squeeze in your Spheniod Sinus. You might try an over the counter decongestant before diving, just to make sure your sinuses are clear even if you're not congested. With all the acents and decents and mask work you were doing I wouldn't be alarmed unless you have recurring episodes.

Simbrooks (a Mod here) nosebleeds pretty much on every dive. it really looks
painful, but he says it's no big deal.

When I was in Open Water training and doing my lake check-out dives,,,,got a minor nose bleed on my third dive......nothing to worry about if that is all you had,,,,as you dive more this problem will ease up and go away.

My son came home yesterday after his first two lake dives at Travis. He walked into the house in extreme pain and his face was swollen especially above his left eye (where it remained sensitive to touch several hours later). He has had the usual allegery/cold and took some Sudafed before the dive (about two hours). I checked here and we determined that he probably had a reverse sinus squeeze/block. He took a hot shower and some Nasonex and started to clear up from most of the pain (he said it felt like a migraine) and his instructor told him that she had the same thing when she first started. He also said that he was trying to "control" his breathing so as to use less air. We think it was basically CO2 excess build up due to insufficient breathing. He had no problems clearing his ears.
Just a note to "warn" others. Don't get caught up in the "How much DID you use" syndrome at first.
I doubt that he will finish today. His instructor said to play it by ear when it came time to dive.

Well I have a funny knot on my forehead where my mask was sitting so I am guessing I am that is where I developed the bloody nose. This week I will be working on equalizing my ears through out the day. I have a new mask to try out which should seal better so it will not have to be as tight. I will jumping into a neighbors pool to try out the suggestion to pull my other mask down to see if that helps stop the leak. (the 1st LDS suggestion to solve my problem) If not I will be using the other mask and going back to see what the 2nd LDS can do to fix this mess. I will say this 2nd Dive shop that is pretty popular on this site has gone well above and beyond in helping me out with this. I was shocked at how helpfull they where. They have even offered me some pool time to work through the issues I have been having. For helping me get this mess straightened out they have made me a customer for life and the 1st LDS has lost a customer and I will do everything I can to steer people away from the 1st LDS. Almost everyone in my class that was fitted for their gear have had nothing but problems with their gear. (masks leaking, calf cramps) We all spent time switching around our gear to get a proper fit. After talking to my instructor and dive master. Is this a normal thing for a class to do? The Dive Master told me nope but I was curious if you guys have seen something like that?

If you want to do everything to steer people away from the 1st lds (aqua adventures) then why not say their name? that is like going to a dive site with horrible conditions and report about how bad the conditions are but not telling anyone where you went.

Aside from them being a tad (way) overpriced I have never had any problems with them.

I assume LDS2 is ScubaToys?

if there was no pain present it could be you already have some blood stuck up in your sinuses which was compressed and then forced out during diving.

In this case though it does sound like some minor bleeding cuased by not clearing properly

It can sometimes be "normal" for someone to come up with blood in there mask. Usually caused by ruptured blood vessels by not equalizing soon enough.

Always pre-equalize.

The fact that your nose was bleeding AFTER class, concerns me.

I'd have a moderator move this thread over to the Diving Medicine forum and see if some of the real Doctors know more.

i had a similar problem my 1st day in the pool. my mask fit a little snug between my eyes and on the top of my nose. i didnt pay much attention to it in the pool but when i got out the inside of both eyes were sore and my nose was killing me. i dealt with a bloddy nose for a few hours and woke up the next morning with 2 black eyes. Thankfully the dive shop I was at in TN was great about it. We got a mask that didn't have a thick center are so it couldnt push onto my nose.

I have to say I was a bit scared at the time but am glad that it turned out to be a small problem compared to other things that can go wrong!!

Have fun diving!!
