If you haven't had a chance to check out our shorelines lately at night, I highly recommend it. So what's Bioluminescence?? It's that turquoise blue color when the wave begins to curl and crash. Even the fish are even causing the blue glow! They dart through the water and leave this funky blue light trail....

Ok - time for the quick scientific stuff:
Bioluminescence is the ability of an organism to emit light. Lingulodinium polyedrum and Prorocentrum micans illuminate like a firefly when they are jostled. When the dinoflagellate is disturbed, tiny sacs of enzymes react. The chemical reaction gives off a blue-green flash of light (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, 2004). The cells do not bother making light during the day.

Bioluminescence is very cool to see. I saw it on every night dive in Thailand earlier this year. Turn off your light and wave your hands in the water and the water sparkles with little blue lights. Very cool.
