Susie,

As a former resident of Indo, i concur with the above post.

Tulmaben has several world class sites, all shore based and there are sevral others which are a short boat ride away. The resort area is an isolated fishing village, which caters specifically for divers and is serene and quiet, you don't have to tolerate the normal tourist rubbish of South Bali, it is a different world up there, and providing conditions are good, you will have an amazing time.

You will see a huge variety of different marine life, everything from juevenile lionfish the size of your thumbnail to 2m Barracuda, sharks and turtles and Humphead parrotfish.

do it and enjoy.

Hey all you experienced, world diving folks,
I am trying to plan a trip to the Bali side of the world and need a little input please!
We plan on doing a week in Bali...topside activities with Ubud as our base and then want to venture out and do a week of diving somewhere. I was innitially sold on Wakatobi as it has all the ammenities we like while diving...all inclusive, strictly dive resort etc but I have heard it is so much muck diving I don't want to miss the Big stuff too.
Thanks so much
Susie

Hi Susie, You need to be careful if you decide stay in UBUD and use it as a base to do your diving from. UBUD is a part of the mountainous regions of Bali and is definately above 1000 feet. You would be better of to pick a resort the Candi Dasa, Amed, Tulamben area do you diving spend a day touring the coast and finishing in UBUD or vice versa.

Hey you guys,
A big shout out to all who gave their 2 cents worth...or rupia's worth :-)
I am leaning towards spending a week in Ubud doing land stuff....biking, hiking and drinking! Then on to Bunaken where Bastiano's seems a doable dive resort. As they have a resort in Bunaken and Lembeh Straits, we might do both areas for a few days.
Has anyone stayed up north at Gangaa resorts? How far is Bunaken National Park by boat from there? Lembeh Straits?
thank you all
Susie

Susie if a combo of both big and small is what you are after you cannot go past Bunaken & Lembeh. I was there last year and stayed at Santika Hotel and Lembeh Resort. Both were excellent.

Santka is only 10 min boat trip from Bunaken Is and they also do trips up to Bangka. Lembeh is a 2 hour car ride from Manado and the resort picks you up and drops you back.

Bunaken is wonderful wall diving with nothing but blue underneath you. Massive fish life but don't expect heaps of big pelagics. Lembeh is black sand with lots of weird and wonderful stuff. See my photos at lfindlay001's photos and albums on webshots

Absolutely fantastic combination.

susie-

I stayed at Gangga Island Resort two years ago and highly recommend it. It is a couple of hours away by boat from Bunaken. But don't worry, there are many excellent dive sites around Gangga. Most of the resort's guests are european. The meals & lodging are upscale. IMO, you get a lotta bang for the buck.
best wishes,
cuppajoe
