When and if Arnie goes panhandling to the Indian casinos, it will not be for tax money, it will be for campaign contributions for his re-election in 2006.

DrBill once bubbled...
Perhaps we need border guards all around the State of California to keep them "furriners" (Swedes, Irish, Pakistanis, Koreans, Chileans, Australians, etc.)

I´m sorry but being an actual swede i take offence att that...
In the first place Sweden has about 9 million inhabitants so even IF we all decided to go to California you propably wouldnt even notice...Let me tell you right now the chances of that happening are about zero to none...
As clearly illustrated by this thread my going to California for me would mean LESS public services, worse schools, more smog and a higher crime-rate...In exchange for this I´d propably get a higher salary and pay less taxes (paying about 30% now on my salary and 25% on consumption) but I´d lose free healthcare, clean air and waters, "free" education (even at college/universities), a decent pension when i retire and on and on...and also ours is a REAL democrasy with 80+ % participating in elections...
Would any of YOU make that change?!

Sorry about extolling the virtues of Sweden like this but DrBill just got me going...:upset:

Maybe, maybe not. Common salaries range from $25k to $80k, maybe a bit more for high end sales.
Taxes? State income roughly 10%, Federal income is graduated, but the top marginal rate is a little over 30% (I haven't looked at the new rates since Bush's cuts).
Sales tax varies by county, but is about 8%.
Tax on your vehicle registration is based on the value of your vehicle, and is about 3%/year, adjusted annually (10% depreciation/year). My '03 Tundra tax is $475, plus about $100 in various fees.
Health care will more than likely be taken care of by your employer... I don't know of any full-time employee who is not fully covered. Many employers also cover dependents.

Of course, Davis just signed a bill requiring all companies with more than 50 employees to provide coverage anyways, and IIRC, 200 or more employees and they have to cover dependents.

I think overall your taxes might be a bit higher, but I would suspect that your overall cost of living may be lower.
Our property values are simply nuts at $150,000 for a 1000 square foot condo in a bad neighborhood in the desert (where the summer cooling bill runs $250).

grazie42- sorry that I offended you. My post was in no way intended to offend anyone from any of those countries. It was simply intended to point out to some other posters that there are "illegal aliens" in our state from many other countries besides Mexico. I felt it unfair to focus simply on our neighbors to the south.

I am one who feels that our country has opened its arms to those of any country that wishes to come and settle here (going through proper channels of course). My grandparents or great grandparents arrived from other countries (including Sweden) themselves. It is one of the strengths of this country in my opinion.

I would readily welcome more Swedes... especially more of your ladies (due to intellect as well as beauty).

Dr. Bill

Can anyone say.......Ahnold for President

All recall BS aside, I didn't vote for the recall or for Arnold, but I do hope he is successful in his fight. I've always said that politics should not be run by politicians. I think he's off to a good start with some of his choises tho..using both the Rep and Dem side advisors.

Not a problem DrBill...I just get riled up about what I too often see and hear about american awareness of reality (not trying to start a flame war btw as most americans I´ve met have seemed like decent enough people)...the point of your post was actually relevant and well made (in retrospect anyways)...

Besides this thread was about Californias re-election and this seems only peripherally connected to that so...nevermind...
