We used to ride the AeroCozumel Britten-Norman Trislanders to Playa a very frequently, back when they were running the "air bridge." One day, my wife climbed in and scooted across the bench seat on the row behind the cockpit, sliding over against the window. On the Trislanders, the doors were staggered on opposite sides along the fuselage. I got to the plane just as another woman climbed in next to her. As I boarded the plane one row back from the opposite side of the plane, I saw the pilot lean back and say something to my wife, and then my wife lean over and say something to the woman. Then, I watched them get out of the plane and change places, my wife taking the seat against the door, the tourist woman taking the window seat. When we landed, I asked my wife what was that was all about? She laughed, and said the pilot (who we knew well) asked her to change places with the tourist and hold the door closed during the flight, because the door latch was broken!

Lol! Got to love third world...it was back then....transportation:)

In Peru in the 70's I flew a on a small plane onto a jungle airstrip where when the plane had rolled to a stop the passengers all got out to help get the plane turned around to taxi back to the terminal.

I ran into problems at the airport Confort Inn last year with the free shuttle. At that time the taxi cab union was not allowing them to take passengers to airport via their shuttle and forcing them to take cab's, they were not cheap. Since then I stay downtown in Cancun at the hotel Mayab across the street from the ADO bus terminal.
The Mayab is a basic modest but very clean hotel and unlike the airport area it's not isolated in an industrial area. I like going to the park about 2 blocks away (artisan park) which has food stalls, music, craft vendors, ect every night. The Mayab pricing varies with availablity but a quick check is currently showing $41USD for the 17th. In the AM the ADO bus start running at 0430 but for an 8 AM the 0600 would get you to the terminal by 0635-0640. The bus costs $72 MXN but I would recommend getting a ticket the night before, so you do it have to stand in line at the ticket window in the early AM when they are minimaly staffed, it is only about a 3 minute walk from the hotel. If the Mayab fills up another place that looks decent across from the front entrance of the ADO is the Plaza Caribe for $54 a night.
If you take the ADO from Playa the bus some times stops in front of a mall prior to the main terminal. You want the main 'centro' bus station, there is no mistaking it. It is a large modern bus terminal, in the AM at the airport the first stop is terminal 1 then 2 then 3.

Just booked a room at the Mayan! Thanks for the tip!

I chuckle every time I read the title of this thread. There is no 'Good place to Crash" near any airport. :D :D :D Land the damn plane: don't crash it!!!

... The crashed plane was clearly visible (as well as the giant AEROCOZUMEL name emblazoned on its side) for every other plane taking off and landing at Cancun...
Was that back in the early mid 80s? I remember the plane but never heard the story.

Was that back in the early mid 80s?.

March 1984. I said it was an AeroCozumel Fairchild, but it was one of their Convairs.
