Best of Ubud?

Hey Y'all,

We will be coming to Ubud next May and spending 7 nights "adventurizing" in the area before we head off to Bunaken Island for some serious diving! We won't be in the rooms long as we plan on hiking and biking and catching the local dances and shopping and did I say drinking?:blinking:

Can anyone suggest a quaint, cool, wood carving laden atmosphere, swimming pool , centrally located place to stay for under $75 usd a night? Really not into the Holiday Inn kind of place. More local, more 'real" but not a backpackers hostel either. Is there such a thing over there? And do we need to book in advance or can we just do it when we arrive?

Try Tegal Sari Welcome to Tegal Sari. Nice little place facing the paddy field at the edge of Ubud town. Always fully booked a few months in advance. So book early.

You really have to go to the Hotel Tjampuhan. Built in the 20's by the Prince of Ubud, and expanded from there. It's exactly what you have in mind, and you can get a room with fan for $58 or AC for $70, including an amazing breakfast spread. Your jaw will drop when you walk the grounds, a jungled hillside of a river gorge. PM me and I will send you pics from there 3 weeks ago. Check out Hotel Tjampuhan Spa. If you have to do a night near the airport before you leave, I'd suggest the Green Garden Beach Resort and Spa in Kuta. Not really on the beach, a block off, but the same kind of thing you're looking for, and only $48 with breakfast. Would go there again in a minute, just like the Tjampuhan.

I second highdesert for Tjampuhan.
We've visited bali for 12 x and always stay at different hotel/resort every time we moved, more than 50 hotel/resort so far. Tjampuhan is among the best for money. Would like to return again but my little girls now love poor Kuta area

Hi Susie,

Check out the following link Pertiwi Resort and Spa ubud accommodation - ubud bali hotel resort and spa the resort is located right in the centre of UBUD on monkey forrest road. It is a real Balinese atmosphere a great tropical feel to it. Definitely not targeted for the backpacker market, very close to the Wayan Cafe restaurant (excellent food), very close to the places that offer alll sorts activities you seem to be interested in. A short taxi or motor bike ride to the Jazz Cafe (excellent jazz and food) Walking distance to the local market (arts and crafts - can bargain here for some really great deals rather than go into the dedicate shops for these artifacts)

Personally We like the Kajane Kajane Mua Villa - Bali Ubud Indonesia, Luxury villas in Bali rates here are a bit above what you are looking for though - I get cheaper rates at these places as I live and work in Bali (last 7 years).

Any of the resorts listed above are fine but I would like to add the Kumara Saki Cottages. Also owned by the Price of Ubud. In fact he lives on the property. Much smaller resort. The pictures on the INTERNET do not do the place justice. The suits list for about $100. Go on the net and type in the name of the hotel and discount and you can do like we did and get the suite for about $63. Do yourself a favor and have lunch at the corner across from the palace and order the roast pig. Rated as the best in all of Bali. I think we paid less then $3 each. dawhale

I would personally not stay at any hotel in the center of Ubud, unless you are really interested in a noisy, crowded environment. It's easy enough to stay a 10 minute walk from the village center, get into town by foot or one of the bazillion cabs when you want, and have some peace.

Some people want to walk out of their hotel and be in the middle of all the auction. I am not one of those people. Kumara Sakti is just out of town. Transportation is provided free to and from the resort into town. Vary quite. A hidden gem. No matter where you choose to stay stop by for a visit. I guarantee you will kick yourself for passing this hotel up. Not a bad room in the whole resort. I am in no way associated with the operation.

Most of the hotels on Monkey Forest Rd appear to be close to traffic noise. However, this is deceptive in most cases. Once you enter the property, where the registration desk is usually located, you will find a sprawling layout of gardens, pathways and bungalows. They are far from all street noise. Most have swimming pools, as well. I was pleasantly shocked!!!
My favorite place is SRI Resort, which is directly across the street from the Pertiwi Hotel and many excellent and inexpensive restaurants, including Wayans. I paid $25 for one person. My room was immaculate,well appointed, air conditioned, separate stall shower (indoor), good reading lamps by the bedside and a refrigerater. Breakfast is made to order and is included in the room price.
The location is in the heart of the city and I walked to the market, shops & restaurants. It is true that taxis are cheap, but it takes forever for them to weave thru congested traffic on the one way streets. Hoof it whenever you can. You will learn the streets and the layout of the town. You won't regret it.
