We're really only interested in shallow reef diving in warm waters. Sounds like we'll be lightweights in the world of scuba and I know we have lots to learn.

Then you'll have a lot of company because that's what the majority of divers are looking for as well. Nothing lightweight about. If it's what you want to do and that's the kind of diving you enjoy then that's all that matters. And yes, you have a lot to learn but we all did when we first started and probably still have much to learn. :)
 
No need to apologize about shallow reef dives, there's much to see above 50 or 60 feet. Me, I'm a warm water wimp and I don't care who knows it. Diving has a lot of diversity so we all can be happy.
 
Rent and borrow for a few dives. Shop testing almost never equals in-water testing IMHO.

Beg, borrow and steal (maybe) until you've a bit more experience with different brands.

Backplate and wing, obviously, though. :)
