Hi,

I'm going to start shooting in RAW and need to buy some new cards. What cards do you recommend as the fastest/best, 1gig or more? What do you experience as the average write time using these cards with an Oly 5050?

Thanks heaps :)

Mel

I just bought a couple of Kingston 1GB Elite Pro CF cards from Buy.com. I'm amazed at how much faster they are than my Viking 512mg cards. In a very unscientific time test using the stop watch on my computer, I clocked the RAW write speed at 4 sec compared to 7-8 on the Viking 512mg. That's gonna make a huge difference!

I can recommend Buy.com, too. I was leary to order form them but I had confirmation in a matter of minutes and the cards were here in 4 days. A+

Hi Dee:

I are looking into buying a CF card for our Oly 5050. Is the Kingston card just as good as an Olympus card? I thought I read somewhere that sometimes cards made my other manufacturers do not always work well in an Olympus camera. But I am not sure about that. Considering you are pretty much an expert and you bought a Kingston card for your Olympus I must be wrong, but I wanted to ask you anyway.

Thanks,
Mario

I don't know where you read that, maybe from Olympus! ;) But I haven't found it to be true at all. The only Oly cards I have are the one's that originally came with the camera and a 512mg XD card. The only reason I bought the Oly 512 was for the panorama ability that you don't get with the other brands. I haven't noticed any difference in either quality or write speeds between the Viking 512 and the Oly 512 CF cards. Both work flawlessly.

Don't hesitate to use other brands of cards! Viking, Kingston and Sandisk are all trusted companies and will be very dependable. I have a Sandisk 512CF card that's had at least a couple thousand photos written to it and it's still going strong.

Hi Dee:

I followed your lead and just bought a Kingston 1 GB Elite Pro CF card from Buy.com. They are offering a $10 mail in rebate until Sept 10. Thanks for the input.

You mean I missed the reabte?!?! Drat! :D
