I will also second Andreas' comments.

You can't beat the diving in Westpunt and you can't beat Ocen Encounters West and their staff for a dive operation. Sol Food has the best food and homeliest atmosphere on the island. All of the abover make you feel really welcome.

If you need a pool, then Lodge Kura Hulanda is your choice in west end. It does have TV as well. Neat set up to boot. Breakfast is great as well. And so is the bar. Lunch food at the beachside restaurant right next to OEW is great also.

If you don't need a pool or want to be self sufficient, then All West or Sunshine's Rental is a great choice.

The west end is slightly secluded, a car is best. You are out of the city, but you can take a day trip into town and see the sights.

I don't know what your travel preferances are. We stayed at All West Jan 2009.

Advantages:
1) Awsome views from patio
2) The Jr. One bedroom was comfortable and roomy. My husband likes to get up nice and early. He would get up, have his coffee on the patio, surf the internet in the living room while I got to sleep in. You are not tethered together like you would be in a standard hotel room.
3) While I am talking about sleeping (I unfortunately am a very light and fickle sleeper) the Carribean can be aggrivating in that department with the barking dogs, roosters, cars etc. The apartments at All West are very quiet with a layout that makes it quiet with the bedroom facing the ocean-not the road.
4) Diving freedom. Grab a tank from the tank room and head out.
5) Close to Sol Food. Something for everybody!
6) I am only a one time visitor to Curacao (another visit in Jan. planned) but in talking with other divers, everyone agreed that the West end had the best diving.

Disadvantages:
1) No t.v. (although on a recent visit to Cozumel, the guys watched a lot of football. Perhaps no tv could be listed under an advantage).
2) Unfortunately Sol Food is not open every day. Your dining options are very limited.

I have heard wonderful things about The Lodge Kura Hulanda and Sunshine's place as well.

As new divers we went to dive resorts; Divi in Bonaire, Fantasy island in Roatan. Slept, went diving, diving and then diving and slept again. We then found the joys of shore diving and really enjoyed the freedom - and then extra half hour or more of sleep it afforded us. And now, unless the resort is in an out of the way place that needs a boat to travel far out and away to the reef, I don't know that it is that necessary to stay in a certified dive resort. That said..... it is nice to have tanks available for an early morning dive or one that starts at 10PM.
We like the reef along the West end of the island. But that doesn't say that any given dive won't be the highlight of your trip. I joined John and his family for a dive at Director's Bay and one at the Dive Bus; each had great visibility and a load of life. I saw my first (Curacao) flying gurnard and Tarpon at the DB. The wreck of the Superior Producer is in town and the Eastpoint dives I hear are spectacular.
If you are into nightlife, casinos and higher priced restaurant, you might be happier in Willemstad. Most hotels are associated with a dive op but Mark and Suzy of the Dive Bus will pick you up and take you on a guided shore dive. You can also drive and meet The Bus where ever the daily dive has taken them.
But I do like the west end. The reef is really healthy and if you can imagine Mushroom Forest being 10,000 years or, then Watamula is over 60,000 years young. Most of the dives can be reached from shore except Watamula, Mushroom Forest, Redhio, maybe Paradise and OK, many more but.... the thing is... they are all good.
In the West, you'll find Habitat in St. Willibordus. There are villas overlooking the hotel. Flamingo often posts here and has a beautiful place. Even though there are still gorgeous villas in Santa Marta, I wouldn't recommend staying there for divers. It is quite a ride to get out to the shore and with Sunset Divers closed, it is not very convenient. In Lagun there are condos and apartments. And, here in Westpunt the dive op is Ocean Encounters West. They have the All West Apartments with air 24/7 and stairs to Westpunt Bay. AW has kitchens, air co, hot water and a great alternative to television, a fantastic view. The Lodge Kura Hulanda is very upscale and is adjacent to OEW. In Westpunt there are condos and a variety of apartments; some whole buildings, some individual ones in someone's home like ours.
Contrary to belief, Sunshine and David do not need to open Sol Food every day - when would we dive? There are other options in the West; The Lodge has a fancy menu and a beach grill, Jaanchies, Dokterstuin, the Butterfly Garden and some of the landhuises serve local food. There are Restaurants Daniels, L'anterneau, Villa Monte, Ranch Sobrino and of course Willemstad chocked full of places is only a 40 minute drive away.
I was just talking to someone. We used to kayak, windsurf, dive, hike etc. If we went on vacation we had a plan. I think that a lot of divers are wonderful people who enjoy their time on Curacao because they are not looking to be entertained. They have come to dive and enjoy meeting others while relaxing "in the country". We've met some really great folks and love it when they come by 4, 6 months or even a year later.
My vote is for Westpunt. You'll need a car to make life easier and a boat to get to Watamula  If you still want to party, go to town for your last 2 nights and your no dive day. If you need ANY information, please let me know and we hope to sea you in Curacao.

We stayed at Lodge Kura Hulanda last December and are returning again in December. :D:D:D:D We rarely go back to the same place twice, since there is so much to see in the world - but this place is so special, we had to return again.

The Lodge is a great place to stay. Ocean Encounters West is right there on the beach and the shore diving is fantastic. You just leave your equipment right there and if you want you can easily take a couple of boat dives to some of the deeper, more spectacular(?) reefs.

The food at the Lodge is very good and the view when eating dinner at sunset is as good as it gets. The rooms, with the exception of the lower level garden view rooms, all have cooking facilities, so you can eat in your room or patio if you so choose. Stop at Centrim Market and pick up some essentials (butter, eggs, cheese, wine), buy some bread from Sunshine and you can set your own meal schedule (although I strongly suggest the breakfast buffet at the Lodge at least a couple of times during the week). Beside a couple of dinners at the Lodge eat at Sunshine's; try Jaanchies and Landhuise Daniels for local food

The atmosphere at Sunshine's is great - nothing like a bunch of divers getting together to share experiences. If you want a special dinner - go into Willemstad for an evening - walk across the floating bridge, take lots of pictures - and then return to the peace and serenity of Westpunt.

I can only repeat - this is a special place that will generate memories that will last a lifetime.

PS -
Sunshine - will see you in less than 5 weeks :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

We are bringing our lights and a night dive (or 2) are definitely in the plans.

It is just so easy.

This year it should be better - after the full moon - not during the new moon.

New to the forum and just got back from Curacao today from 3 days of diving, so here's my 2 cents.

First the diving. No doubt Mushroom Forest was the best dive site of the trip. Outstanding formations, plenty of sea life, and not too deep (45'ish) so a good hour of dive time. Second in my opinion was a fairly new site called Paradise. Again outstanding variety of scenery. Both are boat dives and on the west end. There are many other dive sites both beach and boat. If you're interested in highly rated beach dives, check out Port Marie or Cas Abou.

Now for the dive shop. Ocean Encounters West was simply outstanding. See the post from Andreas. They were very responsive arranging the equipment and dives to meet our schedule. We were staying at the Hilton (more on the accommodations later) and they even provided some great direction from the Hilton to OEW. Once we arrived to the dive shop we were extremely impressed. It was well equipped with an operation that went off like clockwork every day. The facilities were well maintained and the equipment looked practically brand new. Bryan, Toni, Julie, Juanito, and the entire staff worked non-stop to ensure everyone had an outstanding experience. I can't imagine a better dive shop on Curacao.

Ok, now the accommodations. We wanted to stay somewhat close to downtown Willemstad to catch a bit of shopping and nightlife. OEW was only 45 minutes away by rental car, so this seemed doable. I have lots of Hilton points and read the trashing some have given the Curacao Hilton but booked anyway. Maybe we caught them after a major makeover, but our experience was absolutely great. The lobby was clean and well decorated. The room was as spacious and nicely appointed as other Hiltons we stayed...King bed with white linens, duvet, flat screen TV, new furniture...it looked like it was recently remodeled. The facilities and grounds were well maintained, and the staff was attentive, and friendly. I will say the room had a faint mildew smell and dinner was mediocre and overpriced but those are my only critiques. Overall, for a combo diving and downtown experience, this really worked well for us.

My Hubby and I are returning to Breezes Curacao this winter. It's my 4th time there and his 3rd time. Ocean Encounters dive op is located right at the hotel with lockers for your gears so you don't need to lug it around. There is shore diving right there, the dive op which offers boat trips, the Dive Bus is right next door to the hotel or you can rent a car and do your own thing.
