I see. Makes sense. It’s one of those things that you really don’t know if you’ll like them until you buy them and actually dive with them. But if you don’t like them, it’s kind of too late, money already wasted.
That’s true. But fortunately the potential loss for investment in a pocket isn't as much as I lost buying and selling that drysuit. :(

DGX shorts for sure.
If you are going pockets, go with the shorts. They will feel so great.
I have pocket on my waste band, leg strapped one, etc. Nothing compare to actual cargo pockets on your legs attached. The shorts and the best thing out there as you can switch them with any exposure suit.

I added bellows pockets to my wetsuit and I wish I had used the shorts instead.

One problem with the pockets on the WS is that, when you take the suit off, it's harder to get off with stuff in the pockets. With the shorts, not so much a problem.

I envy those who are able to get everything on their waistband / harness, but I have not been able to accomplish that in a way I like yet.

There is much love for the pocket shorts. I get it but I’m not confident the small will fit. DGX explicitly says it runs large. I’m checking out the Apeks one that has a sturdier waist but the cost of that is high.

@Dogbowl I'm curious if you ever tried to take off your rig at depth with those integrated weights?

My rig has evolved over the years. No integrated weights, rubber weight belt and hard weights instead.

I used to use a pocket, but got rid of it. For a rec diver, we just don't need to bring that much stuff that would require a pocket, IMO.

My SMB and PLB now reside in a lift bag sleeve under my wing. Light on right shoulder d ring, knife on chest strap, emt shears on waist harness, whistle bungeed to corrugated inflator hose. I have a dive alert which would always be used over the whistle, but does require gas in your tanks.

OP, if you still think you need pockets I would go with the shorts and just have them alterted if they don't fit, but I bet you could figure out how to do without one.

When I was putting together my kit last year I decided to go with a Lighthawk bcd, back inflate, no pockets to speak of (2 small ones that have no d-ring attachments inside and clip to close, so not very secure) and limited d-rings on the unit. Having just recently gotten back into diving after a long time of not, and not being use to all of the accessories that have been added since my day, I thought the same as you and got a pair of the DGX shorts. They came in somewhat handy, but not as much as I thought they would. First, they do run big. I got a size down and I still feel like I’m a kid walking around with my shorts down showing off my underwear. Second, they have HUGE Velcro closures which are hard to open and close properly with gloves. Most importantly, I’ve found better places for everything, the majority of which have been mentioned before. If I were a tech diver I would probably be singing a different tune, but I have found that straps of inner tube go a long way in helping combat the Christmas tree effect. Sorry so long but I hope it helps.

The one thing I should carry solo and don’t is a backup mask and mostly because I don’t like pockets. I recently saw a clip on backup mask holder though I think this might just add a bit too much to that C. Tree look.

But to answer Dogbowl’s question. If there is room on the waist band I would go for the smallest vertical pocket on the DGE website and I think I would choose the flap velcro closure over the zipper.

But I would also consider (and have) using a small trim pocket and just adding a lanyard and ring to hold various small items I don’t plan to use but still would like to carry, such as whistle and mirror. Would also be useful for carry small debris I pickup during a dive (fishingline!).
