I like the Mares regs because they are great quality and non-adjustable (but still work great at depth).

I have a Mares Abyss and love the fact that when I go deeper, I don't have to re-adjust to flow.

In Boniare I was breathing just as easy at 120 ft as I was at 30 ft. Also no free-flows.

You learn something every day! On this thread I learned that all that is required to make an air2 (or any other alternate inflator work is to add more dump valves. Hmmm...what will they think of next?

Ok Mike I’ll rise. :jester:

It is not something "they will think up next" it has already been thought up. I learned on this board that some people want to add a (count 'em) fourth hose to their configuration.

But wait…

It will be 7..................feet................. long, wrapped around their body and neck, and it will be the safest and best set-up for ALL recreational divers!
They will lament the fact that some have an added failure point in an extra dump valve, but not see any extra failure points in an extra hose, its fittings, and regulator.
:D

My main objection to a alternate/inflator doesn't center on failure points. The number of failure points and the likelyhood of a failure may or may not be an issue. My concerns have to do with using an alternate procedure for controling buoyancy during an OOA situation. Where do you normally reach to add or dump air? I believe that you will reach to the same place in an emergency. Simplifying equipment is ok but it isn't the main goal. IMO the main goal should be to simplify and mistake proof the procedure.

IMO, the less experience and training a diver has the more they will benifit from simplified procedures. However, these are the divers who have the most veriety in equipment configuration and therefore procedures. I do not consider a long hose as required equipment for open water, although that is what I use. However, in a OOA my inflator/deflator is in the same place as any other time. The only additional procedure is handing off the reg.

My comments were 50% Smart A__ (MikeF I detected a note of sarcasm in your fist post :) ) and 50% over-sensitivity to the whole Air2 is a terrible idea thing. It is a simple, clean configuration. I don’t see anything wrong with people using them for recreational diving if that is what they practice OOA drills with.
I use my right shoulder dump all the time because I have an AI computer that is on my left side. When ascending I hold it in my left hand and dump air with my right.
Thinking about that makes me question how others with consoles/AI computers monitor their depth and dump air during ascent?

What I mean by this is name one person that has a better or equilavent Octo to their Primary Reg.
Whenever I'm diving any overhead environment, my Air2 gets left behind and I use fully redundant identical regulators.

Lately, I've been judging my ascents using in-water cues as much as possible and thus minimizing how much I use my depth gauge.

But when I do, my computer is on my right wrist, and i use my left hand for whatever dump I happen to be using at the time.

Ever since I got rid of the console, I've been more sensitive to my buddies' consoles. They invariably hang 6 inches to a foot below them and just get in the way. Why on earth is the 3-gauge console standard equipment?

Identical "in mouth" and "around neck" bubble makers.
