The recent PADI trend is to do AOW immediately after OW and then to do nitrox. It does bother me a bit; I didn't do AOW until I had about 50 dives under my belt. I still dove deep with experienced divers and I was pretty fortunate to cut my diving teeth with friends that are divemasters.

I dunno

My BF had about twelve dives when we went to Blue Corner and Pelelui his first time.I was a bit concerned and got a couple opinions, asked him to read about downdrafts, etc. We dove together several times the week prior. he did great but he is very athletic, relaxed, and follows directions. Of course, I consider him exceptional in every way. We did not broadcast it to other divers. I think it depends on the person. I had 700 or so dives when I first went to Palau and I was a bit freaky to be honest.---all the big sharks, big current, all at once, I am not as brave as some. the first time a downdraft caught me by surprise and had me from 70 ft to 120 before I even noticed, I was impressed! Some people are naturally very confident and that is a big factor. I still will not do Pelelui Express on some days.

I would feel more comfortable diving with someone with 20 dives and good old fashioned common sense than a 1000+ logged hotdog.
I've dived with some pretty good hot dogs! 20 dives and common sense might not have the experience needed to save my buns. :D

within recreational limits, I will take the person who is in good physical condition and has common sense, I'm afraid. Look, obviously, on tech dives, it is a whole nother story, but the times I have gotten into some "situations", it has always been with a very experienced bold diver underestimating the conditions.
