Hi Everyone!

A quick thank you to all who can help!

I want to buy a cobalt, but wanted to know if there will be a new generation coming out soon.

I dont want to buy one now if there will soon be a newer model on the horizon!

Thanks again!

Buying dive gear is a lot like buying any other technology. No matter when you buy, there will always be something come along shortly after that will make you think, "If only I'd waited..."

It's also just like other technology purchases where there is much vaporware and announcements that "X will be out shortly!" So you wait for X and it gets delayed, usually with no announcement, or "X will be out in 3 weeks!!" Then after two months, "X is coming any day now! We promise!!!" So you wait. Eventually you get tired of waiting and buy Y (and then X comes out two days later...) :D

Even if there is a hard date announced, even by a reputable company like Atomic, don't count on it. My opinion, buy it now if you want it.

My subjective impression is that the current console version hasn't been out all that long, and I doubt a major update will be offered in the near future.

It is believed they're working on a wrist version of the Cobalt, but I've seen nothing on the forum to indicate any such release is expected near term.

The big annual DEMA show wasn't all that long ago, Atomic Aquatics was there as I understand it, and their product announcements did not include an expected new dive computer.

So, in a nutshell, I think you're unlikely to see a new Cobalt in the next few months.

Richard.

Also remember that there are hardware changes and firmware changes. I doubt that there will be significant hardware changes but there will be firmware changes which at Cobalt allows (not all dive computers do)

Thanks guys!

Appreciate the insight!

Am totally expecting the new version released the day after I buy! LOL

But I wanted to be informed as much as I can as dealing with LDS's is sometimes a tricky proposition! They are about as much fun as used car salesmen when they smell blood in the water (potential sale).

So am doing my do diligence in preparation of what they say and what is actually true!

Thanks again!

I'd be surprised if AA released a new console version any time soon and even more surprised if they announced it very far in advance.

I'm remember reading in a book on Steve Jobs about a small computer company back in the 1980's that announced they would be releasing a major upgraded model in six months. Of course, no one bought their current model after that, profits dropped off and the company actually went under before they could release the new model. Oops.

One thing to keep in mind is that just because a new model is released it doesn't all of the sudden make the current model bad.

Hello NewbieScubydoo and everyone that has reached out to help! I cannot tell you how much we appreciate the support to our company, as well as the support with eachother. To answer your question Newbie.....There are not any plans to release a new version of the Cobalt in the near future. We are, of course, always looking into the future with new designs and ideas but have yet to re-design the hose version. We have been looking into a wrist version, but this design is also not going to be available for some time. I will make sure to update both Scubaboard and Facebook as soon as I see a prototype walk through the building! Thanks again all!

Atomic Aquatics

I bought the Cobolt in November 2011 and love it. I was going to get a Suunto for redundancy, but when I asked Atomic about their wrist DC I decided to wait. From my conversations the Atomic Wrist version of the Cobalt will be much larger than a Suunto...prehaps about the size of a Galileo...but I have not seen anything yet. At DEMA they were hopeful that maybe this summer or fall it will be ready for release.

Well Atomic just answered that about the new wrist design...:)

Thats why I want the Cobalt, to use as my redundant, as I love my Mares Icon HD wrist mount.

But I am a Atomic enthusiast as my reg (B2), mask (Venom), fins (smoke on the water) and Octo (B2) are all Atomic.

Thanks again!
