Situation: did a beach dive, probably 35 minutes, deepest at about 45 feet. After the dive, I took apart the equipment, and the BC was very heavy---it was full of water!

What might cause something like that? I'm talking about a *lot* of water, not just a few ounces. There was still enough space left in the bladder to obtain bouyancy, but still . . .

Normally the cause of this is continuing to pull on the shoulder dump valve after all the air is out of the BC.

Most BC infaltor hose/shoulder dumps do have a one way exhaust valve to prevent water from entering when this occurs, however it is pretty common for this mushroom valve to get caught on one of the spokes and for an edge of the valve to fold over. The mushroom valve is then not able to close and water can enter when the valve is activated. This mushroom valve is also comparatively exposed and they can get dried out and or crispy fried due to exposure to sunlight.

my black diamond always has water in it after a dive, sometimes a lot...i was shocked the first time i got back to shore and let the air out of the rear dumps...lot of water!!

If you feel your BC is taking on more water than you'd like during a dive, get in a position that will put the offending liquid over the bottom dump valve, given that you have one, inflate you bc a modicum and have your buddy open the dump valve. Temporary solution.
If you feel that this is a more serious situation, by all means have your BC inspected and repaired.

Most pull dumps are one-way valves and a re designe to not let water in. Your inflator/deflator, though, will let air or water go both ways.

If you are trying to dump air by way of the inflator and air isn't comming out water can go in.

Have the bc checked to make sure it's not broke

Make sure you're properly weighted

Practice your buoyancy control so your not playing with the buttons all the time.

just try to estimate the amount of air exiting when pulling the dump valve because the obvious mistake is that you pull the valve a bit longer than needed

hope i could help

:-D

Sticky Button :11: ?

Check the release button on the inflator/release. You may have sand or grit that is causing it to stick open once or twice during the dive for short periods.

I know a few people that have this happen constantly. I have observed them and basically it is because they are using the wrong dump valve and not the highest where the air is. Very rarely is it a BC problem.
