My son is leaving Monday 12/12 for boot camp at Great Lakes Naval base. He has 8 weeks of basic training. I plan on visiting him when he finishes basic training in Feb 06. And of course getting some diving in. ;) He's also dives but not in cold water. Looking for dive shops, dive operations, dive trips etc. in the area.

Stinks to be you...My son just left for boot camp in sunny California and I plan to visit him when he graduates and get in some diving!

The nice thing about the Grat Lakes that time of year is that you won't have any thermoclines to deal with. It's just as warm at the bottom as it is at the surface!

I did my basic training in Great Lakes in the winter. After 8 weeks in the toughest, coldest Navy boot camp in the country the only thing I wanted to dive into were a few beers. I would highly recommend Milwaukee for this activity!

About the only charter going out this time of year is out of Milwaukee, http://www.len-der.com/

The closest shop to Fort Sheridan is Frogg Pond in Highland Park.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out. I am looking forward to diving here if only for one time for a been there done that dive. I m completeing my dry suite class sat. plan on doing so fry suite cives this winter here in Texas for pratice. By Feb I should be ready to brave the cold lakes up there or by Feb I might be wishing my son had joined Mike's son in a sunny Cal boot camp.

Where does everyone do weekend fun divesaround the area?

Milwaukee

There is zilch for shore diving around here, most times its a charter out of Milwaukee to one of the many wrecks that lie in the lake. There are charters from the south end too but I don't think they'll be running in February.

I believe Haigh Quarry in Kankakee opens up again on March 1st, if you can stick around that long. It is a favorite spot for a lot of people here and a good environment to profect your style.

I did boot at Great Lakes but was there 12 weeks because I was in the Drum and Bugle Corps.

Some mornings we did not go outside because of the cold and wind.

Here is the link to the dive shop that runs charters out of Milwaukee in Winter

Your going to need a drysuit. I can guarrenttee that! Redundant air too. I hope the weather gets better. Its the coldest winter I've seen for many years so far.

Good Luck

Jim

I dove at great lakes for a yr.while I was at the base fire dept.It was gerat place to learn to dive.I was cert through PSD.and i was with the Lake County Dive Team. The dive shop I used was Chicago Land Scuba located in Lake Zurlich spelling could be wrong. The owner is Bill and a very great guy to work with. Their is also a lake in Wi.called pearl lake which is a nice place to dive.
