I'm just going to throw out that my Great-Grandaddy helped found the town :) E. D. Balcom contributed the 'Bal' in Balmorhea. It's been long in the family lore, but I can say with authority that he never went diving there

In their rules they say you must have a buddy.

For whoever asked, I am new to the area of Fort Worth, transplanted from Eagle River, AK.

Thanks for all the pointers guys.

Say, how deep does the "pool" get?

About 23 feet IF you stick your computer down next to the grate in the "diving board" end. Otherwise, it's mostly about 15-20 feet max.

Do they allow solo diving? I'd like to head out that way with my wife for a long weekend so I'm not going to drag a buddy along.
We run our certification dives there, about twice a month we are diving. I can't say for certain, but I really don't think they check to see if you have a buddy.

It's average 74 degrees year round which makes winter diving good until you get out and it's 35 degrees on the surface. Came up from a night dive once and found it had started to snow. Water was like bath water though.

I know this is an old thread, but just in case those of you are researching for a weekend trip to Balmorhea....
Do not stay at the park motel. Yes, it's a convenient location...it's also over-priced for a run-down room. Stay at the El Oso Flojo Lodge instead. It's only 4 miles down the road and it has a great Mexican restaurant next door.
The park motel rooms have cable TV, an old TV, and you can pay extra for a kitchenette (mini-fridge and 2-burner stove). No place to eat other than the restaurant 4 miles away. Get the picture?
