I have never seen a ball used in any of our diving or in any GUE training courses that I have been involved in. I really don't see the need for it. Even after reading the discussion here. What is the issue? that potentially the line comes out of the guide? Keeping proper tension on the line, you can still run the line outside of the guide. Better to be comforatable working the line back through the guide. If the ball cuts the line, the line could fall out of the guide. then what? you have same situation, but not practiced with replacing it. I agree that it is small item and I would not choose to not dive with someon who had one, but I still don't see the need. Best, Bob
