in central Ubud I recommend you a dinner at Ary's Warung, one of the best restaurants in Bali and one of my favourites in the world for both the ambience and the quality of food. It is ultra expensive in Bali standards (20 USD for a full dinner) but really worthwhile...

divepix:
My wife and I spent 5 nights in Ubud after Wakatobi diving. It was a fabulous place. I was so glad I didn't stay at one of the beach areas - too crowded, busy. Ubud is quaint and quiet. There is shopping in and all around Ubud, lots of great restaurants, and Balinese dances every night somewhere in town. There are a lot of great hotels, We splurged (25th anniversary) and stayed at Pita Maha ($250 per night), but the most romantic and beautiful place we have ever stayed in the world - and we have travelled extensively. The Balinese people are wonderful and so service oriented and hospitable.
By the way, we have an English speaking tour guide there who is fabulous. Will be at your beacon call with an A/C car for $40 a day. E-mail me if you want his E-mail address. He is a great person, will enhance your trip, and I am trying to get him as many new clients as I can.

Hi Divepix
I'm heading for Wakatobi in Sept. and I would love to hear about the Dive Site. I was on the Komodo Dancer a couple of times and reallly enjoyed the area. Does Wakatobi compare? Would there be anything special that I should bring to Wakatobi? I'm planning
to bring laptop, camera and the usual 70lbs of dive gear. There was a divemaster on Komodo named Doris, and I hear she is at Wakatobi. As far as staying in Denpasaar, I stayed at Kuta Beach Resort and found it OK, but as you mentioned a bit crowded.

Thanks

Ubud is nice - you'll find several local villages that have joined together to produce a single item in that village from smelting raw material to final craftsmanship.

Ubud is not close to the beach but it is easy to find cheap transportation should you want to go.
