I'm a new diver, not yet certified (as I've probably said too many times already, haha). Anyway, I just won an auction on eBay for a new Suunto Vyper for $255. Here's the problem... I found a GREAT dealer afterwards who sells ScubaPro and that's where I bought the rest of my gear from. He recommended the Aladin Pro Ultra wrist computer. I'm just wondering if I made a mistake or if I still got a great computer comparable to the Uwatec?

I prefer doing my business with my dive shop and I'll buy both if I have to and put the Suunto up for auction again if necessary. Just wondering what you pros think? I've heard a lot of good about both, so should I just be happy I got the Vyper for under $300?

Great price compared to around $400.00 for a new wrist mount. It wouldn't hurt to have it looked at before you dive with it.

Of course your GREAT dealer would recommend the Aladin... that's what he sells...

You have a great computer in the Vyper...
Don't Worry - Be Happy...

BTW, if your dealer is truely a GREAT dealer he will be rejoicing with you at your good fortune... :D

But I'll bet he is just a good dealer...

Good point, and you are probably right about the dealer. Thanks for the input about the computer, I'm sure it will be just fine and besides.. being new to the sport I won't know any different!

The Vyper is an excellent computer. You will be happy with it. And, from what you've said, the price was right.

The Vyper compares very favorably with the Uwatec. Your LDS shouldn't hold your good fortune against you. Follow the instructions, learn how to use it...and, as large_diver stated, "Enjoy!"

Good luck on completing your certification.

Murdock;

Hi Murdock,

One piece of advice. Don't use the computer untill you are cetified (and maybe even a few dives after that).

Be sure you understand everything you need to know about using the dive tables and gauges on your console before using the computer on dives.

1: You'll appreciate the computer more when you see what it can really do for you in comparison to doing everything "by hand".

2: You'll be fully prepaired to handle it (and have more confidence in your own basic skills) if it ever fails during a dive (or dive trip) and you have to go back to the "old methods" of doing things.

Personaly, I own 2 computers (1 air, 1 nitrox) and have never witnesed any dive computer fail, but I've met people who have and heed their warnings.

Just my 2 cents...

I totally agree... I spent about 2 hours on the dive tables last night. I have everything down pretty well with the exception of the following type of scenario:

Multiple Dive:
First dive is 40 feet/30 minutes, second dive is 35 feet/40 minutes. What is the minimum interval between dives....

I think I got it now, but that's about the toughest thing in this whole PADI course as far as I can tell.... Everything else is coming pretty easily for me.
