Actually Catherine, I've discussed my mistakes on this board on many occasions ... but I try really hard not to blame them on someone else.
That's the million dollar question ... ain't it.pilot fish:Try to be a bit serious here. As in the Op's account, was that a good DM or a bad DM? Let's get back on topic.![]()
JeffG:actually, I was being serious.
To ask if the DM was good or bad...you first need to understand what the role of a DM is.pilot fish:OK, that's part of the way. Stay loose, I'll guide you. You OK so far? Now,as in the OP, was that a good DM or a bad one? Don't stray off topic, stay focused and try to answer that part so we can have a constructive debate on diving.
NWGratefulDiver:That's the million dollar question ... ain't it.
Unfortunately, all we have to go on is a somewhat unspecific account by one diver ... who seems to have dropped out of the conversation, by the way.
Having read his account, I asked some pointed questions that might help shed light on the topic ... unfortunately, they remain unanswered.
Without knowing more about the circumstances, it's impossible to know whether the DM was good or bad ... or whether the person in question was actually a DM at all ... we've only heard one side of the story. And since DM's don't typically work on charter boats around here, there's some question in my mind that the story is what it appears to be.

OK, let me slow down a bit so you can catch up. Below are a set of events that took place on that dive. Let us assume for this debate that those events are true and accurate. Are they the actions of a good or bad DM? SEE POST BELOW
"She was not a good diver and was clueless about diving, it seemed like. Here light was hanging a couple feet down and I saw it drag through like 8 seapens, a kind of soft coral. I finally told here but she didn't understand me and switched to here backup light. We were supposed to follow her, but after 30 min she haldn't found the wall so she looks at us and says to go up. It was completely unnecesary. She just starpted swimming up but way too fast. Me+ my cousin just looked at each other and went up slowly. At our safety stop deapth, she wasn't there so we just leveled off then she landed on top of me. On our final ascent, here light, which was still hanging down got caught on my primary's house. She was going up way to fast and ripped the reg from my mouth and drug me the rest of the way to the surface. " ]]original post
