That Dive Rite setup sounds like a great deal, and I'd be tempted to get one were I to be in the market. I do like having an STA instead of having the tank right on the plate as in the Venture or Pioneer, though.

As The Kracken mentioned, get it with the shorter inflator and minus the pull dump.

$400 should do it.

Any plate $100.00
OMS or DR Wing $~200
D-rings and sliders $~15
Webbing $10.00

STA $75.00 (checkout Oxycheq's STA) Or just get cam bands and a slotted plate.

Use the leftover money to buy the DIR DVD set.

Right now, at LP, he can get: DR SS plate $105.00
DR Venture wing 180.00
DR standard harness 33.00
$318.00 TOTAL

He can't get that right now since LP is out of the DR standard harness.

It also leaves out the crotch strap and cam bands. Still cheap, though.

Although I didn't phrase it right, by "right now" I was referring to the wing which seems to be on sale. If he could find a used backplate..........

Johnny take a break man.

I was at work, I had nothing to do all day, and the boss was gone. What else was I going to do besides hound people on SB? Give a guy a break eh ;)

Are there other options and /or factors that I should consider?

A couple of things that I would suggest:

1) Support your favourite dive store (assuming they sell the equipment you want) rather than buy it online. No local dive stores... no dive industry. They won't stay in business on air fills alone.

2) Don't sweat the small stuff. Figure out what equipment is the best for you (including after sales support) and buy it. Even a $100 amortized over the life of the equipment is negligible if it means the difference between getting what you want or settling for something else.

Other than that, I love my Halcyon gear and I've got friends that say great things about the OxyCheq wing.

Good luck on your DIRF.

My advice is to spend more at the local shop if you think the local shop is offering you a good value on a product you want to buy and services you think are useful.

Don't support your local shop just because it's there. That's idiocy of the highest order.

I couldn't agree more. I thought this was so obvious I didn't feel the need to state it. The sentiment goes as far as: don't expect them to match the $ of some internet warehouse clearing centre and then provide all their absent service.

I am not a fan of the truly "local" LDS due to my initial experiences there, but there is a nice shop about 40 minutes away and they are a Halcyon dealer - certainly if the prices were equal I would buy Halcyon and maybe in the big scheme of things, the extra money is a small investment over the life of the equipment.
