I have had a backplate wings combination that I have been using with doubles since before DIR was thought of, but over the last year I have started to dive dry and noticed that it is a real struggle getting in and out of the rig.

Recently someone posted a link to the DIR "adjusting your backplate" page and I noticed that the threading on my plate was different than on the site.

My plate has crossed over webbing behind the neck, it came like that and I never had a problem with it until recently with my drysuit even though I loosenes the straps.

Has anyone else had this problem, or got any constructive ideas about whether the straps should or should not cross behind the neck, or ways to make getting in or out less of a struggle.

I have considered putting in a quick release clip or weight belt buckle low down on the left shoulder strap and been meaning to ask here about that.

I know that it is DIR frowned upon to have quick releases, but havent heard why.

Quick releases are frowned upon because they are prone to breakage when tanks, etc. are dropped on them. While I don't believe an SS weight buckle on one of the shoulder straps is allowed in DIR, it is a pefectly acceptable and common thing amongst other Hogarthian style divers.

My OMS plate came that way and worked ok. When I went fully DIR I cut out the BS OMS harness and went with the single webbing rigged without crossing the sholder straps in the back. Since changing the straps I have found getting in and out of the harness to be much easier and more comfertable.

Ok, I have rethreaded it, loosened the straps from the top a little and will hopefully get to dive this week. I will report how it goes.

Still--while diving in a harness with a dry suit it is difficult to get it off---either with the crossed OMS style or the regular way it is difficult--- at least for me anyways-- I just have one side slightly looser than the other and have my croach strap a little tighter-- yes it hurt my nuts sometimes--but it is better than asking for help for some reason!

I would ditch the plastic buckles and go to a single web! No quick links should hold you system together! Just MO

I have now dived the rethreaded backplate a number of times and it has greatly reduced the problem.

It is more comfortable to wear, and I have hardly any struggle geting it on or off like before, even with the drysuit.

I dont think I need to put the clip in at all.

Which answers your question as to why it's not DIR -- It's not necessary.

This should be a bit of an epithany for you -- you had a problem (crossed straps in this case). The mainstream recreational SCUBA industry mindset would not step back and look at the *whole* problem, they'd simply add QRs (even more complexity) to solve the problem introduced by the incorrect threading of the backplate. You did the right thing and solved the root problem (wrong threading of the backplate) and therefore no longer required the additional complexity and failure points created by QRs.

You can still chase Scandinavian Girls, as long as you do it the right way...
