Trip Report: Cozumel 3/17-3/24
Hi everyone,
Just returning from a fabulous week diving in Cozumel. In fact, Im on the airplane back to LAX as I type this.
I met up with a great group of people from Scuba Board who attended the trip from all over the United States.
We stayed at Caribe Blu which is a beautiful little hotel (30 rooms) that are ocean front, had its own boat dock, as well as being located next to Blue Angel Dive Shop and its own reef for 24/7 hour beach diving!
We used Blue XT Sea Diving as our dive operation. Wonderful service for a full week of diving. We did three days/ 3 tanks and 3 days/ 2 tank dives, plus one 2 tank night dive. The DMs and captains were top notch and a lot of fun to be around.
Cozumel has 25 offshore reefs. Of the 25 reefs, we did 17 different reefs. I also did three beach dives off our beach at the hotel. Bottom times ranged from 60 to 90 minutes. Depths: 130' to 20'.
Water temps averaged 77-79 degrees. I was diving in a skin, however, I actually was a bit chilled on a few of the dives. Viz was AMAZING!!! Endless??? So it seemed on the majority of the dives.
As far as the dives go, we did lots of caves, swim throughs, and exploring the vast walls that just suddenly drop down into the dark blue abyss. We saw hundreds of fish, sponges, and corals in all shapes, sizes, and colors. One barrel sponge was big enough where a person could fit inside. The coral heads were just as big.
My favorite reef that we dove is called Punta Sur Devils Throat. Its a spectacular reef with deep caves and swim throughs. In one area of the cave, there is a sponge that has grown into the shape of a cross. As we exited the cave, we found ourselves at 130' into the blue abyss before turning and making our multilevel dive. Other reefs and walls were a lot of fun too due to the drift diving and the Rippin current!!!
The highlight of my trip was being able to see three different types of sea turtles, several Nurse Sharks bigger than me, AND..........EAGLE RAYS!!! Wow! They are amazing!!! Almost as amazing as the Manta Rays that I got to see in Kona back in October. I also got to see several good sized Groupers, Barracudas, and a Tuna! Hmmm....and I have been affectionately dubbed 'Eel_Queen' since I love to seek out the critters. The group was trying to convince me to change my SB Name. LOL
I could go on with my report, but just wanted to keep it brief. For those of you who are thinking of going to Cozumel, you wont regret it!!! There is a really cool book that just recently came out called Cozumel: Guide Book and Log Book It has fold out maps of all the reefs of Cozumel along with a description and difficulty level. It is put out by UnderwaterEditions (http://www.underwatereditions.com).
If you would like more info on my trip, please feel free to email me. I look forward to going back sometime soon!
