Aloha Everybody!

Have you wondered how you can make a difference for the coral reefs around Maui? Well, join us on the morning of June 26, 2008 for a CoralWatch monitoring dive at Ulua Beach and be a part of a global effort to protect reefs from drastic decline.

Why now, you ask? New research indicates that more than half of the world's coral reefs could die in less than 25 years. Human activities and climate change have contributed to the loss of 30% of the world's reefs to-date, another 30% are severely damaged. Locally, Maui's reef sites are experiencing unprecedented human impact and with the new development scheduled near Ulua Beach, now is a prime time to take this close look at the site's health.

How can we help? Simple Scuba and Maui Dreams Dive Co., in partnership with Project AWARE and CoralWatch are bringing this simple, non-invasive coral reef monitoring method to divers who are passionate enough to make a difference. CoralWatch monitoring charts have a series of colors representing different coral bleaching and recovery stages. Divers match the color of the coral with the color on the chart and record this information for submission to CoralWatch.

Scientists at CoralWatch will use the data collected for Ulua Beach to help answer questions about global coral bleaching and recovery patterns as well as the duration of bleaching events. As part of a continual commitment to the local reef system, Simple Scuba and Maui Dreams Dive Co. are tracking the health of Ulua Beach over time and reporting these findings regularly.

I will also be offering an AWARE Coral Reef Conservation course alongside this planned dive. Ideally, we would meet for the academic portion on Wednesday afternoon or early evening, though we can make these arrangements separately. If you want to do this course, the only cost is that of materials: approximately $30 for the AWARE Our World, Our Water manual and $20 for the certification card. This certification would count as one of your five specialties towards your Master Scuba Diver rating.

If you are wanting to come on the dive, but don't want to do the course, THERE IS NO CHARGE. Simply let us know you're coming and show up at the dive site with your gear and we'll have the CoralWatch materials ready to go!

If you have any other questions or would like to join us, please either contact me here, or get in touch with Michelle at Maui Dreams Dive Co. In order to have sufficient materials available for everybody, we do ask that you let us know you're coming ahead of time.

Thank you, and we hope that you'll come join us in making a difference!

Cheers,

-kb
