Couple of things:

1. My understanding for the # of divers is 430 registered, not 115. Not all who register show up. (We had 6 no-shows in our group.) Based on divers we saw, crowd at the stage, our guess woul dbe something like 300-350 divers actually showing up for the event. Regardless of the actual number, certainly down from the 500 or so that we normally get for this and weather most likely played a factor.

2. The pigeon feet were a very cool find and a great story once we called the guy in Long Beach. Here's a link to one of the shots that I've got posted on our website:

Ken, I understand and didn't mention "Registered" Vs anything other than what I heard from one of the people under the pop-up! It seemed right to me, and in no way was there close to three hundred of anything in the small group of people in the square. I would say if you took away the locales that 100 to 130 (divers) would be right? Now they checked everyone in so they might know how many were in the water and I hope we get an official, mine was just an observation as one standing in the middle? I sure they know and it is too bad that so many didn't show up, we had 5 from our group who said they were who didn't! It really doesn't matter the ones that were there had fun and a better chance at prizes! There are a large number of fair weather divers, and a lot of people were put off by the conditions, but it didn't bother me!

I also know there were divers there from shops doing courses who didn't join in because they were otherwise engaged! We ran out of trash and viz before we ran of divers. I think the average bottom time was pretty short!

Couple of things:

1. I'm not an official spokesman for this event and am merely giving my impressions/opinions.

2. We usually assume about half the people who do the event also are there for the awards ceremony. The crowd was certainly smaller than normal. We pegged the awards/raffle crowd at around 200. That would translate, by our estimation, into 400 participants. That's pretty close to what someone else told me (can't remember who) were the number of divers who had signed up.

3. If you want an accurate number, I'm sure you're right that that could be gleaned from the DM sheets from each dive site. Give CCD a call and see if you can get that number, if it's of interest to you.

4. But it seems like we're all in agreemment that those who did attend (regardless of the actual number and in spite of the miserable visibility) had a grand time for a good cause.

It's always a blast, I'll definatly be doing the dive and lending my voice again next year, bad vis or good! If you were in the el Gallion saturday evening, you saw the first karaoke injury that required hospital treatment!

Wow... I guess I missed more than the dive Sat. Tell us more about the karaoke injury. I didn't want to walk up and say hi in case I spread my evil viri (which seem to finally be realizing that my body is NOT suitable habitat!).

I was working the room, singing to everyone, and as I dashed back to the stage I grabbed the top of the post that frames the stage. It was made of copper, and razor sharp. I have four cuts on my hand, very deep. Almost sliced the pad of my index finger off. 4 stitches.

I'm a trooper though, I finished the song. Then I went to the hospital. I don't think anyone not in my group even knew I was hurt.

In a delightful bit of irony, I was singing, 'Old Enough to Know Better'

It was my first time at the Cleanup, and It was a great dive for me!

A weekend like that is what I started diving for. Good people, decent dive, although we were there Friday, Saturday and Sunday logging only the cleanup dive hangin with friends and sharing tall tales can't be beat either!

Bless the raffle and TJ chumming...I made out with a metal detector and a new wardrobe of t-shirts!

Definitely be back next year!

I did catch your little show there TJ. I was in a booth at the back, but saw the whole thing and your hasty retreat after you got done. Glad to hear you're doing better and you didnt leave any parts on the stage! Way to gut out the rest of the song!:rofl3:
