Here is a test video clip showing original footage shot with auto white balance, compared to 3 different ways of color correcting in editing.

A quick manual color correction in Premiere
Premiere auto color correct
A quick manual color correction in Vegas with the 3 wheel corrector

Results are decent, but can be a little artifiicial with some areas oversaturated, over contrast and some purple water. But overall, not bad for quick color correction.

Thanks to ScubaBob92651 for donating the footage.

Thanks Ron.

I am thinking I lean toward the manual color correction in Premiere as far as the three go. I definitely need to learn more about it with my Vegas edition.

Thanks Ron - that was a good comparison. I use Avid Liquid 7 and do colour correct using that. It is possible for me to MWB from my housing, but I'm not sure I really understand and how often. Also when I change from using a filter to going to lights if I need to re-balance.

I have a trip to Indonesia in September and I want to capture the colours as faithfully as possible.

Since my housing has MWB access, I always use it. Resetting MWB on any significant depth change or when using lights. I believe the less correction I have to do in editing, the better. But, I was impressed with the results of this quick little test. The color corrected footage looked decent.

This test was just something quick. I'm sure the color correction in Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut, Avid, etc., can all look the same given enough tinkering.

What I really want to know is, can AWB footage be easily edited to look as good as MWB footage ? I hope to answer my question next month when I take long weekend trip to Grand Cayman.
