It was an Eastern Fiddler Ray (Guide to Sea Fishes of Australia byt Rudie Kuiter) some people call them Shovel nosed Rays. We are also member of Sydney Dive Academy. Fish knows Peter X from when that shop was a Frog Dive Shop. We also deal with Frog Dive.

sydney dive academy - cheapest tank hire in sydney? doesn't get lower than $15

I have only seen one Guitarfish, which I think is the same as a shovel nosed ray? Are those markings unique to the Eastern fiddler ray? (I did a brief search and that seems to be what the internet thinks)

Thanks, Bryce - glad you enjoy my photos! Sorry you had to buddy up with someone you had to watch instead of someone you could enjoy your dive with :(

ferris - sounds like an interesting trip!

Bowl - such awesome critters!!

Got out for two more yesterday with some friends and they were both good dives. But we were cold - and it was 27C!! All three of us were like ice blocks when we got out - no idea why, it was a nice day here. The olive sea snakes are getting friendly again, wouldn't back up off me so I could take photos. Tried and tried but have lots of frames of just part of a head LOL Found some cool nudis that I haven't seen for a while, so that's always a fun thing. Have only dealt with one turtle image from yesterday - will get to more later today, hopefully, though I may jump out on the big boat for another couple of dives...

We have seen them a fair bit recently at Bare Island. In the past it would be years between sightings. The last while we have been seeing them fairly regularly. They have masses of them in Melbourne.

Haven't done Shiprock in over a year. I have heard that they have done a great job of putting steps in. Not necessary to be a mountain goat anymore. I will have to check it out again. It is such a tide dependent dive tho...

Actually my books show them as quite different. The shovel nosed ray and guitarfish have quite pronounced elongated snouts.

I love your shots Alcina. Interesting the things that we see in our "home dive sites" we tend to get a bit blase about. When we travel I notice that the things we get excited about the locals aren't! I remember finding a cuttlefish in PNG. Took one shot 'cause.. "hey it's just a cuttlefish" everyone else including the local DM was all excited about it. We see cuttles all the time. When I was in Florida we saw a seahorse which Scuba Jenny was excited about and .. well I can see seahorses any time I want at some local sites! I was excited about the beautiful jellyfish in Florida.. everyone else was compalaining about them and trying to avoid them.. I was up among them trying to get shots

bowl - looks like lovely (if kinda cold!) conditions!

Glad you like the photos - tough crowd over in the UW Photo area, seems like commenting is a lost art! Feel bad for the newer shooters, I know how important the feedback was to me when I first started sharing.

Got out yesterday for two more and we hit a site we don't dive very often. It was lovely - packed with glassfish, 100s of coral & rankin cods, a few big trevally, good viz. Honestly it's not my favourite dive site, but I enjoyed it and am glad I jumped in. Second dive was an old favourite and played with a sea snake, found that one of the groups of anemonefish has about 5 new eensy weenie babies and otherwise just relaxed with the locals. Didn't take too many photos at all yesterday and was experimenting with lighting stuff when I did - not all of those experiments went well LOL

Water temps were 26/27C and I wasn't cold at all on either dive this time. Viz was 15-20m on both sites. I think I'm going out again today, if there's room for me. Feels so decadent to have been able to sneak out for the last three days - a fourth would be amazing!

Oh I love the glassfish shot! Yes it is nice to get feedback from your shots. It isn't about having shots that are National Geographic quality (altho some of your are) it is about vicarious diving and sharing dives in places we may never see. The feedback really helps to encourage and improve shots. I have also got a few ideas to try from shots others have posted... or adapted concepts from them. I love seeing what other people see, how they set up their composition and what they take pictures of. It has got to the point where I know what kind of shots my buddies like and can point out things I know they would like to take pics of. Sometimes it is also because I know I can't capture the shot and they are likely to be able to. I really enjoy sharing the inal product but also sharing the photo ops as well:)
