A New Year's Day dive is planned at Lake Thurmond (Clark Hill for us Georgia folk). We are meeting at the SC side of the dam parking lot at 1pm on New Year's Day. About 10-15 folks have indicated that they will be joining us for the dive. All are welcome. Conditions as of today's dive are : water temp 52 degree, vis 15'. We recommend at least a 7mm fullsuit with hood and gloves.
This is a report for today's dive. We began our dive at 10a with air temps of 60 degrees and sunshine. Water temp was 52 degrees and vis was at least 15'. Lake was at 322.5', up a foot from last week ( 7 1/2 ' below full pool). We began our dive with a swim to the airplane at 28'. From there we headed downward to our newest attraction - skull (with mask) and crossbones ( crossed fins) at 45 feet and continued onward to the missle (airplane fuel drop tank at 75'). We then headed North to the wall at 82', swam past the dive flag on the log. Due to the great vis, lights were not needed at 82'. Lots of small fish and one cat, no large fish today. After at long swim along the wall we swam up the slope to the 65' wall (58' today). We continued along the 65' wall until reaching the trench. Great vis in the trench today. You could see both sides clearly. Exiting the trench we wam to the angel statue at 47' (impressive today in the great vis) and continued upward to the 40' ledge (today at 33') heading South along the ledge past the stumps and large rocks. The gnome is showing it's age and may need replacement this year. We dropped back down the the pool filters and continued on the the 3 big rocks at 47' (today's depth). From there we swam South past the large piles of hydrilla that have died and drifted to depth. We turned West along the 40' ledge (today at 33') that runs perpendicular to the Dam. After a swim we headed upward to the bottom edge of the rocks of the dam and turned East. we swam to the ski boat, through the bouyancy course and back to the plane. We took time to clean the silt of the plane in preparation for the New Year's Day dive and then made our way upward along the rocks to finish off a 5 min. safety stop before exiting. Dive time 1:05, depth 82'. What a great relaxing dive. Looking forward to the New Year's Day dive.
