Need some thick gloves for your cold water diving?

When I was in WalMart getting my polypropelene undies for my dry suit course (in the sporting goods section where they had clothes for hunters), there were also a selection of gloves. Imagine my suprised joy when there were some nice polar fleece lined 5 mil neoprene gloves for just $10.00!

So if you need extra gloves for the cold, or extras in your gear bag, check out WalMart before they change their displays.

I picked up a pair of these to wear when water is too warm for 7 mil gloves but some coverage is warranted. Instead of having velcro strap on back of wrist, just tuck them into sleeve. They are also great for getting the feel of things when just starting out underwater. Much easier to locate snaps, rings, etc. Well worth the money and don't take up much space in gear bag.

Polar fleece is like wool in that it maintains insulation properties even when wet. For example, if you are wearing a pair of cotton socks and you get them wet (and the air temp is cold), your feet will get cold. If wearing wool/fleece socks -- you stay warm.

I actually just bought a pair of polar fleece-lined neoprene socks for the same reason -- I am going to wear them inside my booties when water temps are colder. I found these in the hunting department when I was up in Maine at LL Bean last week, but you might be able to find them cheaper at Wal-Mart or anywhere else that sells hunting gear.

I have a pair of expedition weight Duofold long underwear. I wear these under my wetsuit when diving or waterskiing in cold water. The first time I got out of the water I could not believe how warm I was in the cold air! Didn't even feel like I was wet once I pulled the top of my wetsuit off even though I could wring water out of the Duofold shirt! I think the expedition weight is the heaviest they make, they're about $40 per piece and worth EVERY penny. I mix them with polarfleece under my dry suit too and any water I manage to let in through the neck opening (my neck is too scrawny for the seal that strangles everyone else!) stays away from me, the outer layer of polar fleece wicks it up.
