I just purchased a Dive Rite plate and Trek wing. Unfortunately the doofus I purchased form failed to mention that I would actually not be getting anything in the "Famous name deal" to attach the wing to the plate with! OK fair enough I can go out and buy some screws at Lowes...but so I don't have to take the whole set up in with me...does anyone know the correct size I should get? (It will also make my search about 100x quicker).

Cheers!

Are you using this with a single tank?

If so, you will need cam straps and possibly an STA. If not, your doubles should have the screws on them already.

Yes I am using it with a single tank.

I do have cam straps.

I was advised to check out the feel without the STA before putting the money down to buy one.

I use two 5/16th carriage bolts. The length of the bolt depends on plate thickness and the use of an STA. I'm not sure the exact lenght of the bolts but they are less than an inch.

I also use a pair of lock washers and wingnuts You may want to use nylok nuts. They are less likely to loosen over time. I had a bad experience with loose wingnuts. You can find the thread here.

Well if it is a new DR back plate it has holes cutt in the plate to mount the tank direct. All you need is two cam bands threaded through the back back plate and wing, you don't need to bolt the wing to the back plate as the tank will keep it in place when it is cammed down to the BP. I will say that purchasing a STA will make a better mount and easier to remove for doubles, though from your post I would bet it is safe to assume that you are a bit away from doubles at this time. Don't worry about a trek wing tacoing it is fine for a single and zip ties will not change anything except maybe reduce the lift of the wing and make it look funky.

You don't *need* bolts.. in fact, if not using an STA, they may get in the way and make the tank unstable.

:D

I think you will find that you don't need to bolt a Trek wing to your backplate. If you do so, you've got the right idea: be careful about the bolt size. Halcyon makes some small plastic bolt/nut combinations that they use to attach their MC pack to backplates - they have big flat heads and screw down so that you won't have issues with them extending out too far. I suspect that Dive Rite carries something similar.

Be careful at Lowes - you want a pretty high grade stainless steel and the typical hardware store bolt isn't. Be sure that the end of whatever bolt you use has been carefully deburred, too.

OH! Tobin at www.deepseasupply.com makes these really neat rubber bolt-type things made specifically to hold a wing on a backplate without getting in the way of the tank.

Contact him (he's also on the board as cool_hardware52) and I'm sure he'll hook you up.

Dive Rite actually makes a couple bolts specifically for this. The cam bands will hold it all together but if it's off a tank, the whole thing is really sloppy. The bolts hold it nice and tight.

If your talking about the same famous name deal that is often mentioned in these threads he will gladlly sell you the bolts for about $12.50 each. That's the hook on that deal the base package is attractively priced but any accessory you buy goes for 3x the going price. If you dive without the sta I can pretty much assure you that you will be ordering one shortly. It makes the whole set up more stable.
