I've browsed these forums long enough to see quite a few long hose regs pictured in classified/etc. I'm wondering what the best way is to attach a bolt snap at the end of my new 7' rig. Some seem to use cable ties, other a fancy nylon knot, or O-rings. How do you tie that fancy knot anyways?

Almost looks like a lashing??

I use an O-ring from a tank neck. Fold it over the eye of the bolt snap in a U shape and then zip tie the two ends to the hose near the fitting on the second stage.

I use an o-ring because the connection is easily cuttable or breakable in an emergency if it got hung up on something. Also if the clip comes off, you can't actually lose the hose.

Backup lights and other essential equipment that has no secondary attachment method to you are secured with boltsnaps and cave line for a more secure connection.

Hmm, how do those breakaway snaps compare? I have to admit, i never thought if having to -RIP- my hose away from an entangled snap ...

The small nylon line is easy enough to cut if you have to. But it won't disappear before then.

I've had a bolt snap get stuck in between the slats in a metal bench on a dive boat before. When I stood up, the o-ring popped and the boltsnap fell to the deck. If it had been tied with line, I might have lost my balance on a rocking boat wearing doubles. It's a secure connection, but easily breakable if need be.

There's a video somewhere of a guy doing a backroll off a boat and getting hung up and he's dangling from the gunwale. I can't find it at the moment, but I prefer to chose my connection based on importance.

SPG and hose bolt snaps get o-rings -- they can't be lost if the bolt snap comes off.

Backup lights get cave line -- they CAN be lost if the bolt snap comes off.

Edit -- something similar to this:

YMMV.

I tried the DiveGear Express knot, but it doesn't look quite the same. Just need to get my hands on an old O-ring and I'll try it out. Just to be sure, you squeexe the O-ring halfway through the eye of the bolt snap, and cable tie both ends to the hose?? a picture is worth a thousand words!
