I have planned my enytire trip. The one last detail that I need a little help on is there several ATM's in cozumel? Or do I have to carry a bunch of cash to pay for my vacation.
Thanks, Fran

Hi, we ran out of cash when we were recently there and used the HSBC atm in the main plaza that does dispense cash in US dollars. There are several others around that area but I'm not too certain if they dispense in pesos only or pesos/US.

......are all over the island. You will get the best exchange rate if you use them with your debit card. I have never seen them dispense US $$. Anyway, your money will go a lot further if you use pesos every where you can. It is almost like you get a 10% discount everywhere you use pesos, especially if you get away from the tourisita areas.

Have a great trip.

Fran,

Have made numerous trips to Cozumel and have found like the other posters that the ATM's will give you pesos and an excellent exchange rate.

We were just there three weeks and closed a deal on a house. We made five trip to the ATM and the avearge exchange rate was 11.2. We had a limit of $500US a day. We would get 5500 pesos and it cost $494. We were not hit with any ATM non-member usage fees either.

We had a contractor lined up to do so some work and he wanted to be paid in pesos. We will eventually open a bank account there to make things easier.

The Chedraui (Mexican WalMart) had an exchange rate of 11.23 on purchases which we have found to be the best on the island.

US dollars are readily accepted anywhere. Forget the traveler's checks or credit cards as you will get the 10 pesos to the dollars business.

You will also find that there are numerous exchange business scattered throughout the island. All the ones we saw were all paying 11 pesos to the dollar when we were there.

If you want to know where the banks or currency exchange locations are, as well as a good currency converter, here is the link to a page where I put all that info:

I agree that the ATMs and Banks are the best avenue for exchange. Make sure you are getting top exchange rates, especially when pulling out larger amounts!!

when we were there in Sept. the ATM's at the downtown Plaza banks were giving you a choice of pesos or dollars, I think it was the first time I experianced that. Don't remeber what my bank hit me for a service charge but it seems like it was just a typical ATM charge.
just remember the ATMs will only give you large bills ($20 or N$@200), and I've had trouble getting change sometimes. if your just trying to buy some water or sodas at a store and hand someone a 20 they look at you like your crazy.
we usually take plenty of 1's and 5's with us for these occations and cab fares. use the credit card at restaurants when they accept them and pay with the large dollar and peso bills if they don't.
a lot of times using the credit card works out with the exchange rate in our favor by the time I get the bill, not always but more times than not.
